I guess no vagrant or vandal has ever hopped a three foot tall fence before.

It keeps the majority of people out of the area.

To deny that it is easier to keep an area clean and safe when you don't have mobs of people walking through it is asinine.

Keep searching for a way to place blame on anyone except the people who caused this shutdown. Because here is the thing, Republicans knew damn well what would happen if they forced this shutdown...and they did it anyway. And yet you want to blame someone else...you've been played.

I just think it's laughable that in your mind this public space would be overrun with criminals and vagrants by days end should a three foot fence be taken down.

Either you have a very low view of your fellow man, D.C. in particular, or you're reaching for any excuse you can to justify closing an open air public space.

There's no fence around this bench at the end of my street and oddly enough there arent psychopaths playing Russian roulette or selling crack around it. Meanwhile there is a bench, a park actually, on the other side of town that is locked and fenced off and every night it turns into a hot spot for assaults, prostitution, drug use, etc....

I dont understand. The one with no fence should be the #ty one, right?

We've all been played. None of this should have ever been a government service in the first place. The mere fact that there are "bnon essential personnel" means we're being ripped off everyday as taxpayers.

I'm so glad someone paid attention to the size of the barriers. Unless vagrants and others are very very short, then they shall not have a problem getting in.

There is a saying...choose your battles wisely.

Methinks the White House Gang, will end up with double black eyes, in attempting to keep the last remnants of the HEROES
Of WWII from paying homage to their fallen brethren.

If they think spitefully blocking a handful of withered old men, with canes and wheelchairs, will have no impact on our perception of them. As our Commander and Chief plans his next tee off time, instead of meeting these Heroes and thanking them for making it possible for him to become POTUS....they are only proving how out of touch with *The People* they actually are.

Shame on them...shame shame shame........

Thank you all so much for replying and offering your opinions.

This is still an unfolding story as the veterans arrive in Washington today. Please return to this thread and offer more as it developes.

So what do we know so far?

1) Veterans are enroute for a peaceful tour

2) Mounted police are said to be deployed

3) Some members of congress will be there for assistance

4) Respect for our veterans will not be lossed!

Thanks again all

You seem to be ignoring the fact that the placed would be trashed just by everyday tourists. The Park Service gets paid to make sure these places are safe and clean...they don't clean themselves.

Do you think crowds don't make a mess of things? Do you think everyone picks up after themselves? Even if their are garbage cans, who is going to empty them?

You are trying really hard to deny reality.

And yes, I do have a very low opinion of my "fellow" humans.

Those serving their sentences by doing community service, could easily to this no brainer maintenance, with minimal supervision That's how it's done in my State. Saves the tax payers a lot of money too.

You need to actually spend time with people to form such a jaded opinion of them. Maybe you need a better group of friends.

Really?

And who is going to organize and supervise these people doing their community service? And how many people do you think it will take to maintain and operate all of the national monuments? Or do you think we should just open up the WWII memorial? What about the Vietnam vets? What about the Korean war vets? What about those that adore Lincoln? What about people who traveled across country to go to the Smithsonian?

I'm sorry, but you have a very simplistic view of things.

If you really feel that's what people would do then why not let them?

If the parks department simply serves as glorified trash pickers for a society of animals who would dump snickers wrappers in Lincolns lap then what's worth saving here?

America should stop living the charade and just paint "Surenos 4 Life" across Roosevelt's big stone head.

Let the slobs trash their own monuments. If that's what they want then it's what they deserve.

You are so pro government. If not already in a government position, you should consider it. Your unyielding temperament lends it's self well to the career.

I personally support the WWII Vets in this issue. I've shot off an email to the WH, letting them know of my extreme disappointment in their unyielding temperament on this matter.

You obviously like to only look at the side of the bread that lands butter side down on the floor...we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Well thank God! The park service has pushed the barricades aside for the vets. I am proud of their support....

Furthermore, the GOP presented an admendment to the budget yesterday and today that would allow memorials like the WWII memorial to remain open for these veterans and others.

It fell on deaf ears. Maybe better luck today. Highly doubtful.

The Republicans have the ability to end this, they refuse.

All they have to do is drop the partisan politics out of a funding bill and everything re-opens.

The Democrats are absolutely right to deny any partial funding bill, Republicans are trying to use these veterans as a political football, it is quite shameful.

Just had to fix it for you.

The Socialists have the ability to end this through compromise, they refuse.

I don't really think there are any true Democrats in office anymore and if there are, they don't have any power.

Do you think the government is trying to provoke a response from the American public ?
Has there not been enough in your face government control to test the public tolerance ?

Yes, that is exactly what would happen...people are slobs.

Do you honestly think that people are clean and responsible and that they clean up after themselves? If so, why do we employ people to clean up EVERYWHERE?

Thank God is right. And thank the park service for showing they have a brain and compassion...if not fear of repercussions, to make them do the right thing. I read on another forum, the extra security brought in to meet the WWII Vets, ran when the media camera crews arrived. The beaches of Normandy before...the Veterans Memorial yesterday...they can't be stopped.

Which partisan politics have the Democrats inserted into the CR?

What exactly do you want the Democrats to compromise on?

I'm a bit confused by your comment. If you are alledging that respect for those that gave all and sacrificed a lot, doesn't deserve the right to attend their own memorial, then Rome is exactly where you should go.
