While the House was debating a bill this afternoon to provide funds for veterans’ benefits, including disability payments, the GI Bill and VA home loans, the Senate was getting packed up and ready to head home, having adjourned for the day. That means the government shutdown will continue for at least a second day, but it also means the Senate will likely find a clean continuing resolution on its desk tomorrow morning that protects funding for veterans’ benefits. That should be an easy vote, right?
Maybe not. Rep. Nancy Pelosi is suggesting that the Senate should reject anything less than a continuing resolution that funds the entire government. Pelosi says anything less is “using” veterans as a bargaining chip; Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) says the idea that the Senate could vote it down is “sick.”
House #Democrats just told America's veterans they don't rate ahead of #Obamacare. Very sad. #FairnessForAll
Rep Doug Collins
Democrats just curb-stomped veterans. Because Obama told them to.

Boo, Hoo! I'm a veteran and I don't think this is the end of the world. Republicans need to stop throwing a tantrum and trying to destroy the whole country for their own pig-headedness.

The White House also rejected the bills in advance.
“How does the White House justify signing the troop funding bill, but vetoing similar measures for veterans, National Parks, and District of Columbia? The President can't continue to complain about the impact of the government shutdown on veterans, visitors at National Parks, and DC while vetoing bills to help them. The White House position is unsustainably hypocritical."

I don't know how you can be a veteran without realizing, at some point during your service, that the government doesn't care about you.
