Hi all,

I have always wanted to share this on ATS, but as I have seen so many similar experiences just be completely shut down rather than nicely shared and talked about, I never really got round to it. However, I have decided that regardless, I want to share my experience. Isn't that part of what ATS is all about?

Okay so firstly some background info. I live in the UK, in the County of Essex, and the town of Benfleet. 13.4 miles east of my home, is the Shoeburyness MOD base which is co-run by a company called Qinetiq.

www.shoeburyness.qinetiq.com...

As you can see, this base is rather ordinary. Nothing special. It has some bombs go off and what not, but as far as I can see, nothing interesting goes on there.

Also, for those looking on a map, Southend Airport is not to far away from me either! I do see the planes coming in for landing around about 1-2 miles South of my house, and occasionally planes bank around my house to get onto the landing flight path. The noise is pretty minimal and does not really pose any "Noise pollution" to my area.

Now, I have always been the kind of guy who "Believes it when he see's it", but I do not claim people to be liars. I never rule anything out, but my decision is made when I see something. I have never seen a secret project, a UFO or anything out of the ordinary so I am yet to have the experience of a life-time. However, back in around January, I think this may have changed.

I was out in my garden around mid-night having a smoke (Incase people wonder why I stand in my garden in the middle of the night), just pottering around and well.... Smoking. I heard a noise I thought was a plane so I look up to see if I can spot it. Nothing. I assumed it was banking somewhere or just was out my view. However this noise, it kept getting louder and louder, and really really deep in frequency. I instantly thought it was a plane coming to crash, but there was no sudden boom or silence. This noise just kept coming. It got to a point where I was about to cover my ears and go inside, but I really wanted to know what this thing was. It wasn't until I stopped and thought about it, that I realised this thing was not a plane! I finally clocked on that this noise was something else, and whatever it was, it was right above my house and the surrounding areas. It didn't move fast, but I came to realise this thing was passing from East to West. I was in awe of this sound. It slowly moved West and the sound slowly went away. But I am telling you, whatever this thing was. IT WAS HUGE!

Now, I am not saying this is aliens or anything. But I simply just couldn't and still haven't worked out what this thing /noise was!!!.

I mentioned the base and airport earlier so you can help me in trying to figure this out. This was not a plane, I know what a plane sounds likes and trust me. This was not a plane!!

So, with that in mind... What was this thing?

So you heard the noise, but didn't see anything?

Like it was an aircraft that was cloaked?

Well, from most UFO reports I have heard about in the past, alien ships seem to be quite silent. So they generally got the stealth part down pretty good. If you got a noisy contraption, you probably got some Earth based project, attempting to duplicate an alian type.project, and failing miserably at it.

Maybe it was low and behind your house?

I would be able to see it from my garden still man, just walk to the end and you would see. Plus there was no way this was a plane. Ive been around a lot of planes and air shows, this was not a plane... That I know of.

Sounds cool my friend but i don't know if anyone is gonna know. If you seen a little bit of it and not just heard it maybe. But it could just of been a sound alarm or something the army base was working on

I've heard really loud planes before too, and for the life of me can't find the bugger in the sky. I just think they're probably really high up, or if it's at night maybe they're hidden by those high foggy clouds that you can't really see.

Occasionally there's this little moped that drives down our street. It's that loud it can wake you up. Maybe some plane engines are like that too, lol.

Sound dissipates in air with distance, you cant hear a passenger jet 5 miles up at 500mph.

Could it have been something just below your line of sight?

Hmmm, sounds like a very strange event. So would characterize the sound as the sound of a Jet, or anything similar. Or is the sound totally different. Ive heard jets over my house, and they just get louder and louder, but I rarely see them, due to speed, and terrain.

Hi brace22

Thanks for posting this, sometimes it can be hard to do on a site like ATS because chances are you will get ridiculed by atleast one poster.

Anyways I have a few questions for you if you don't mind answering them.

1. What was the weather conditions? cloudy, humid, clear?
2. What kind of sound did you hear? could it be more associated with propellers or a jet based engine?
3.Geographically where does your house sit? is it in a valley or on a hill?

I ask these three questions just to get an idea and perspective of where you are and how an aircraft might sound if it was to fly past or near your location, from my experiance propeller based craft can sound like they are about to crash in my location giving the right atmospheric conditions even though they are reasonably high.

If it was a jet... well jets can move that fast that they can be manymiles away before you hear them so the chances are you will never see them, unless you see it before you hear it ofcourse

Someone with a powerful stereo watching a movie with THX sound? Sorry, couldn't resist. On a serious note, I agree with Ray1990, the surroundings will help determine if it was just an acoustic anomaly from a known source, some ufo(by this I mean in the real sense of the acronym Unidentified Flying Object), or a ground based noise. Waiting for details before I can give a solid opinion. Interesting though.

Not sure if this has anything to do with what you saw, but did it sound like wind in a tunnel, or somewhat of an airplane. Like somewhat of windy sound effect from a video game. Not sure as how to describe it, but any where along those lines.

Hey I will happily answer your questions! Just to clarify I am not trying to argue against it being a plane haha. It is just nothing like I have ever experienced. Okay so answers:

1) Weather was very cold but with good visibility. The odd cloud here and there but nothing big and very high up anyway. I could see the stars too so yeah a clear night.

2) Have you ever had the bass turned up really loud on a stereo? To the point where the speakers cannot handle the sub frequencies and you get that really awful humming sound. It sounded very much like that. Hopefully that answers Specimen's answer too!

3) I did a bit of research for you on the location of my home. It sits 91ft above sea level and is placed at the top of a hill, however my road goes up higher if you travel .5 miles east of my house. It is very residential, we have a park about 200 yards away behind the house, but there are hundreds of homes around my little area. We are not essentially a valley, but if you was to remove all the buildings in my town, you would find that the area is very hilly in all directions for a good few miles. I should also mention my home is roughly 2.5 - 3 miles away from the sea!

Does this help?

Might have been a cargo aircraft, or a U2.
U2's are exceptionally loud...

Clarification question: did you actually see anything in the sky? (i.e., stars blocked out, lights, silhouette.)

Some more possible causes: mechanical work being performed on jet engines to stress test them - this is very loud. Also sounds a little like descriptions of PDE noise, and you do have an airbase nearby.

My curiosity leads me to ask.......
Was the noise a jet noise...? Or more of a vibration / hum ...? Did you feel that your body was resonating with the noise...?
What was your specific location in relation to other houses / neighbours...?
How long did the whole experience last...?

Finally what is your favourite Sci-Fi film....? (Genuine question)
