Annoying people spying on my WIFI traffic

I just recently found out that people where spying on my internet traffic. Why would people do that?

A joke? Revenge?

What do I do?

they can see everything you do, everywhere you go, see passwords you type, websites you use, logins/passes, any info that you send over the internet can be intercepted by someone that is spying on your wifi.

How do you know people were spying on you?

Disconnect your WIFI and go with hardline.


Either that or learn how to secure your connection, this sounds like a real pita to be honest.

Can you describe what it is that makes you suspicions that they are watching your activity? I'm guessing they said something to you or something like that. Please share.

If you think people are spying on you I would suggest going to a hundred different porn sites to look at stuff you think is disgusting, they will get the point fairly quickly.

That is somewhat true.

No they annoying part is that they being the type of people they are got mad that I cared about a certain subject.

They thought I was going to sit and download porn all day,play games and watch movies.

I was learning to program in C# and object C, reading and researching. They got a little childish that I was using the service to do something somewhat legitimate for once.

Really sad grown ups acting like that but hey it is what it is.

As long as you have a strong WPA or WPA2 password, the WiFi traffic is encrypted. There are ways to intercept and read the encrypted traffic, but the average "Joe" doesn't possess the knowledge or equipment to do so.

I was checked by a licensed mental health practitioner.

They found no mental illness.

I agree with the other person on this thread that said to go wired. If you're using Windows Vista, you can get a wireless usb adapter that can broadcast to any of your devices that MUST use wireless. You cannot do this with Windows 7 however, and I'm not sure about Windows 8. If you use wired ethernet, then the only spying will be your ISP or anyone powerful enough to get records from them.

I read through the post again and you didn't say How it is that you know you are being "Spied" on.

In addition, I am curious, How do you Specifically Know who it is .. ?

As for being paranoid; a lot of people are paranoid from time to time with good reason; being paranoid does not mean you have a mental illness.

Here is how I view being spied on...I just assume that I am being spied on from time to time; and I figure the government knows all about me by now. I have learned to accept that as fact; and I just go about my business and live my life.

And...really if they look in upon me frequently...they must be really bored...I'm just saying....

As far as wireless security goes, you have three or four options (well, really only one):

1) WEP

This is junk security. WEP encryption is very weak and can be "broken" quite easily since the PSK is transmitted in clear text. Someone with a wireless packet sniffer can pull the PSK out of the air in just a few minutes.

2) WPA

Much better than WEP, however, it still has its weaknesses. It's harder to break, but can still be done with relative ease.

3) WPA2+TKIP

Another notch up the security ladder, but still not the best. It can be a challenge to break, but can be done with enough persistence.

4) WPA2+AES

This is the best available encryption for the average joe. Yes, there are better methods (802.1x and others...), but this the absolute best option for your average consumer grade wireless gear. It is extremely difficult to break, especially if you use a strong PSK. If you use this option, its safe to assume that no one is going to break it except for maybe alphabet soup agents, but even they will have some difficulty with it.

Incidentally, some of the best wireless gear available is from Ruckus Wireless. Their gear uses WPA2+AES and can also make use of 802.1x in the proper enterprise environments, but there are a few other patented features that make it more secure than anything else. Ruckus APs don't use omni antennas like everyone else... They use an array of dual-polarized directional antennas to Tx/Rx only in the direction of the wireless client, and the AP makes a decision about which combination of antennas to use for EACH PACKET.

So if you were going to attempt breaking the encryption on a Ruckus AP by sniffing packets out of the air, you would have to locate your gear directly between the AP and the target client.

Furthermore, Ruckus makes use of a unique and patented technology called Dynamic-PSK. This means that EACH DEVICE on the wireless network uses its own randomly generated 64 character PSK. Since every device on the network has a different PSK, it makes it tremendously difficult to use the same old sniffing techniques to break the key.

If you are in an enterprise environment and want the absolute best security (and performance) you can get from a public wireless vendor, Ruckus is your best solution. Hands down.

What on earth are you talking about? What can't you do on windows 7/8 now? plug in a wireless usb stick and ?

Well that solved it. Now I can't talk to the nas. I thought something was wrong, when everything was working and all.

I love it when people think their wifis are being hacked. From the sounds of it, it's the pesky parents too. Snooping on your c sharps and telling you off for not being guilty. Which proves guilt.

I'd be more worried about the webcam sticking out from behind the book on the book shelf behind you. Sneaky parents...

There are also "spy shops" now in most major cities where you can buy all kinds of snooping things. (there are 4 near me in Michigan).

One "dancer" I knew of, was telling the wife of her "boyfriend" everything she did on line, on her cell and tablets. She had bought a few things that sent every text, email (deleted or not) to her...every search and wifi bit of traffic as well.
Drove the wife nuts how she knew everything all the time.
