I agree with where Gazrock was going.
criticizing something makes you seem sophisticated, while praising the same thing makes you look naive, and you can see why there is a huge bias
against feeling positive thoughts about America.
Even so,
I have some friends from the UK, who had a chance about 2 years ago to come to the US on visit and stay with us on the vacation part of their trip
here. It was a lot of fun, and it was fun to discuss with them "the little things you never see or learn about in the movies."
Another friend, this one from South Africa, liked precisely all the things about America that she was supposed to loathe. She particularly
enjoyed the way the US flag is a part of the culture--used in everything from car dealerships to flying on front porches on an ordinary weekday. We
took her to a baseball game and she loved the way the whole rowdy crowd grew silent to sing the national anthem. She thought our neighborhood 4th of
July Party was perfect. But then, she wants to immigrate!
