Sanctions against the Iranian regime are pushing the Islamic Republic's economy into deep crisis, according to key Israeli officials in comments seen as a further indication unilateral military action may have been put on hold.

The Iranian rial fell 5% to an all-time low against the US dollar on Saturday, according to financial websites. The value of the rial has fallen by almost 57% since June last year, leading to big price increases for imported goods.

Israel's finance minister, Yuval Steinitz, said Iran's economy "is not collapsing, but it is on the verge of collapse". The loss of oil revenue would approach $45bn-$50bn (£28bn-£31bn) by the end of the year, he told Israel Radio. "The Iranians are in great economic difficulties as a result of the sanctions."

What's sad about economic sanctions is the fact that it is the people (fellow human beings) in Iran that suffer the most.

Medical supplies, unemployment, shortages of food and increasing prices. It is the people, not the regime that suffer.

The foreign policy analysts have stated more than a few times that sanctions actually strengthen the regime. It is the people what suffer, not the regime- it makes the latter entrench even more to stay in power.

Of course, with the entire region seemingly being turned against the west, this is probably the main aim of the sanctions.

How long will Iran take it before striking out in retaliation, thus providing the west and Israel with their 'justification' for war?

Iran as a modern state has no history of launching any wars... The US though... not so much...

Sanctions or war, I'll take the sanctions.

People forget (or were never aware) that Ahmadinejad, when he came into power, did a great job of undermining or overthrowing the older, more experienced members of the regime's officials. That power shift along with the crippling sanctions have greatly weakened Iran.

Keep the sanctions in place and watch as a major power shift happens again following their economic collapse, back to a more moderate and compliant regime. (I doubt we'll see anything like an "Arab Spring" revolt rise up, but you never know). If, however, hotheads here in the US and Jerusalem get their way and launch a preemptive war against Iran, the hardliners grip on power there will be certain, the sanctions will vanish, and Iran will be back doing business with China, Russia/Eastern Europe etc.

Regardless or not if Ahmadinejad is a terrible human being or the second coming of Christ - it is unfair that the regular HUMAN BEINGS who live there should be punished as a result of politics.

Although I cant say its surprising that in a dispute between Israel AND Iran that Iran is the only place that has any sanctions put on it - especially since Israel's bitch has the biggest stick.

I know this is unrelated but i'd like to note that between 1918 and 1930s, that the german populations were oppressed, beaten, killed, and raped in Poland, France, Czech, and Danzig, something we never hear about and all we heard about was 'NAZI started WW2 and wanted to control the world'.

The sanctions against Iran are an act of war! With that being said I don't know why Iran doesn't pack in their nuclear ambitions (weapons, or energy), the sanctions would be lifted, war would be averted and everyone would be happy. Unless this isn't about nuclear weapons......

I think they are making nuclear weapons.. Making friends with North Korea, and their high enrichment of Uranium..It seriously doesn't take a rocket science to put to and to together.. It's practical common sense..It's funny, cause you go out in public and act innocent, and deep down you really are making weapons..but you trick the world in thinking your not..This has happened many times in history people..wake up and smell the coffee..

Well taking into consideration that this news are from Israeli sources I will take it with a grain of salt.

With that say, is hard to see how a nation that everything they produce is consume by their own population could be in the verge of collapse.

Isolationism have its benefits, people are the ones supporting the economy and that includes the consumption of oil.

The only ones that are losing money is the greedy Bastards in the world that can not touch Iran oil.

Sometimes people forget that once upon a time America used to produce and consume within its border making the nation strong.

Greed and corrupted capitalism has not been very good to America and the rest of the world, look who is now making the profits while the rest of the nation falls into a welfare state including the EU.

Iran has lost 45-50 billion from the oil sanctions placed upon them. This is seriously damaging their economy. This is lowering the living standards of many Iranians, so why continue on this path? What rationale could their possibly be other than the true intentions of your nuclear program being for the purpose of developing nuclear weapons?

It just doesn't make a shred of sense to sacrifice your economic well being for the sake of developing nuclear energy; the tradeoff is too great.

The only logical explanation then is that Iran actually wants to develop nuclear weapons.

Well said! it's really sad how many people Did not pay attention in history class, Sanctions are a form of warfare and we are at war. just ask the japanese what their last straw was before their Warned attack on pearl harbor.

How exactly is Iran "terrorising" the Israel estate? Last time I checked there were no sanctions on Israel, even though they built anywhere from a few hundred nuclear weapons. No-one denies Islam has a long way to go in the world - particularly with its knee jerk reactions, however Israel is the provoker here.
