I still want one now. But I just choose not too.

Strong discipline, friend. You should be very proud of yourself.

And not just expensive because the cigs themselves are so overpriced - but I use so much perfume to mask the smell that I go through a £38 bottle EVERY month, also the chewing gum and mouthwash I constantly have on the go costs a small fortune.

I would love to give up, I don't understand why I have never been able to... I have gone for weeks without but then something will stress me out and that's it, back to square one....

Instead of smoking, go for a run instead, lift weights or do a living room workout. It works much better than smoking as far as relieving stress.

My bosses face would be a picture if I said ''right I'm stressed out'' and went off for a run

Maybe I could keep some weights under my desk

Thanks for the advice though

Would you have been comfortable with people smoking inside?

It is not the responsibility of any employer to provide people with an area to smoke!

I do not feel sorry for people who abuse their privilege to smoke. Whether it's flicking butts out of windows or littering them all over the ground, it's still disgusting.

Feel free to do what you want. If reading people rant about cigarettes bothers you so much, don't read it.

Wow, you smokers are so defensive about your habit. I'm not trying to tell you how to live, so settle the hell down. What I am saying is that the effects of something like smoking are not confined to you. If you have family, it effects them as well. If you have children in your family, it effects them. For the short time I smoked, I refused to do so around children, or other people who did not smoke, because I understand the effects of second hand smoke. So if you have children or grandchildren or family that do not smoke, you are negatively effecting their health by smoking around them, if you indeed do so. If not, great. I don't really care what you do anyway. In fact, I'm rather certain I mentioned that in my post......

This is true but the anti-smoking organizations have become anti-tobacco and anti-nicotine so that they are seeking restrictions of alternatives that are safer and confined only to the user, as well.

In the US it is has been made illegal to mail tobacco products from one state to another, even if these are snus, dissolvables or snuff which in no way pose any threat to those near the user.

E-cigs do form a cloud of water vapor but it is not toxic like the cloud of smoke you are trying to keep out of, but there are those who are also opposed to them in public/work places. That all or nothing attitude, like in the OP, is ignorant, being that alternatives do exist.

I like smoking too. I can afford to smoke, I'm fit and healthy. I smoke-roll-your-owns, or bulk tobacco from Nelson province (through a contact I know) and enjoy a good drink every so often too. I don't eat meat, that's my personal choice too. I try not to hold it against you when you eat meat, so leave me be when I smoke a cigarette.

I know I don't need anything to quit, but I like smoking and as one of my few luxuries I have the common sense to continue smoking. I loathe jogging.

Would you have been comfortable with people smoking inside?

Here's a little trivia for you: at one time, people did smoke inside! And somehow, humanity survived.

Here's some more trivia: before the socialistic programs that now try to control our every action "for the good of society", people actually minded their own business too. I know it must seem totally unbelievable, but there was a time when people didn't tell others what to eat, what to drink, what to drive, where to live, how often to mow the yard, what kind of house they should live in, when their garage door could be open, ad infinitum. People seemed to be happier back then, despite them all dying off before they reached the ripe old age of 20.

I still smoke inside. That's right, in my home, in my shop, and in my car. I will continue to do so until that guy who is big enough to do it tells me I have to stop. I want to see the guy who can do that. I know he's out there... I just want to meet him, because he's going to be the biggest, baddest, meanest thing I have ever seen.

Understand this: when you start talking about how people "ought to quit smoking", it's no longer just an opinion. It is now an affront to my ability to live as I see fit. You are not voicing your opinion; you are condoning the everyday affront that I endure. It has gone way way way beyond "I think..."; now it is "You will do..."

No, I won't do as you think. You went too far to play that innocence game.

Wow, you smokers are so defensive about your habit.

Maybe that's because you anti-smokers are so demanding that I cease to exist or live the way you want me to.

How many laws do we have on the books about where I can't smoke? How many taxes am I saddled with (theoretically now, since I roll my own and will be rolling homegrown tobacco soon) just to enjoy a pleasurable experience? How many times a day do we, the people who like to smoke, get to hear how evil we are and how quickly and horribly we are going to die?

You anti-smokers could make a Jehovah's Witness cringe! You take every conceivable opportunity to control me, to berate me, to demonize me, and then bat your eyes in innocence because it's "for my own good". Get off it. I am not going to back down from this issue.

I'm not trying to tell you how to live, so settle the hell down.

Yes, you are, and no, I will not.

I just love that "smokers affect everyone around them" and "the old I have a right to clean air"

1. If ventilation is considered sufficient to render the environment safe for miners, who would die without that ventilation and for people who work at toll booths, who would also die within about 1/2 hour without that ventilation - then why is ventilation not considered sufficient to render the environment safe for non-smokers, who would not immediately die without the ventilation.

Is there any possibility of a great big fat LIE here.

No one has the right to clean air. NO ONE. If there was such a right to clean air, then someone would be charged with the responsibility of providing it to you. NO ONE has the right to demand that the air in a privately-owned hospitality facility be to their liking. IF you don't like the air inside a bar or restaurant - LEAVE.

Another BIG FAT LIE - if anyone was truly interested in clean air - they wouldn't drive cars.

I'm not sure where you live, but in the US workers are legally entitled to two breaks, and one lunch per 8 hour work day. I personally never been lucky enough to have such high status at a job where I can just walk out and smoke whenever I want to. I have a smoke at breaks and lunch. How exactly is this cutting into productivity when such time would already be spent not working? Every co-worker I've ever had always took their legally entitled breaks, even non-smokers.

If you are lucky enough to have a job where you can just go outside and screw around whenever you want, you are also probably stopping work to take a personal phone call, or do any number of other things that is cutting into your work time. So why are you picking on smokers specifically here?

Keep smoking, you will get these gifts also.

Except for the millions of people that smoked their whole life and never got Emphysema? I have many people in my family who lived long, healthy lives while also being life long smokers. Out of probably 20 grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends, etc who are either currently dead or in their 70s-80s, not a single one has any heart issues, lung issues, etc. All but a few were lifelong smokers.

Am I saying that smoking never causes health issues? Absolutely not. But I will say that I think the health effects that have been associated with smoking have been blown out of proportion. They make it seem as if you smoke you WILL die of a heart attack, you WILL die of lung issues. When in fact, that just isn't true. The myriad of elderly folks I see around sucking down a cigarette, and people I know personally proves that.

Another thing, when people talk about the "cost to society" do you have any idea how much tax revenue smokers generate for the government? A LOT. Fine, everyone quits smoking, and then there is a whole lot less money to go around. And people STILL die from lung cancer, or heart attacks, on and on.

And to those demanding clean air. OK. I'll stop smoking. But I DEMAND that you stop driving a car EVER. I demand you NEVER take the bus. NEVER ride in a cab. Never use your gas weed whacker or lawn mower. NEVER use any product made from oil, or that was brought to you by oil (hint, that's almost every last single product you ever own, use, or touch in your entire life)

So spare me, my smoking is inconsequential compared to the multitude of other air contaminants being pumped into the air.

Thank you some common sense in this thread.

I have a part-time tutoring job at my college, and am temporarily assigned to the IT department on a regular basis. I step outside to smoke when no one is in need of assistance. Sometimes that's once an hour on a slow day, and sometimes I am going full blast for three hours if there are a lot of questions. I have been told I am one of their most productive tutors, especially since I also voluntarily take on the task of making sure all the lab computers are up and running.

If there is an errand one of the instructors needs run, they will assign it to me... they know I puff down a cigarette while crossing campus. I get my nicotine and work at the same time.

One of the regular IT guys smokes as well. He takes a smoke break when he can, just like I do. If something needs his attention, he is right there taking care of business; if he isn't working on something critical, he smokes when he feels like it. It works, for both of us.

What I have found is that some of those people who spend way too much time in the smoking area will also spend way too much time at any excuse for not working. Some workers will do their job, and some will do what they have to to keep their job. That's an issue of poor workers, not smoking.

You are absolutely correct. Anti-smokers like to portray workers who choose to smoke as having lower productivity then non-smokers.

What they did to support their contention that smokers are less productive, is that they calculated that each worker who smokes takes breaks for their cigarettes (about 20 minutes or so a day). Then they compared that to ......
absolutely NOTHING. They pretended that every non-smoker was on the job every bloody minute of the work day and declared smokers to be "less productive"

So lets look at what are considered to be the top ten time-wasters at work according to time management experts.

www.stdtime.com...

1. Surfing Facebook and YouTube for personal use
Checking personal email Social networks Conducting personal business Spacing out Running errands Making personal phone calls Applying for jobs Planning personal events Arriving late or leaving early

Notice how smoking breaks don't even make the top ten? These are activities that non-smokers indulge in just as much as smokers.

I bet the instance of cancer was higher too.

I'm not a spring chicken. I remember when people could still smoke in bars and you know what?

I DON'T MISS IT!

Why? Because I can walk into a bar and almost anywhere else without cigarette smoke to aggravate my asthma. It doesn't take much of a whiff to cause problems there.

You see, your personal rights are nil when you are in a public setting. Everything you do in that public setting can affect others also in that setting.

What you do at home is your business. I do not care.

And for the record, I opposed the idea of my city banning people from smoking in an open-air marketplace because it's not a confined public space and it's impossible to enforce.

But in a bar, school, place of employment, etc? I don't find it acceptable.

Most of the people I've seen openly #ing off and shirking their duties are smokers.

Imagine that I go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. That time adds up. Work doesn't get done. Other people have to pitch in .

I've helped people catch up in the past. Once again, smokers.

Just saying.

Fine words my friend - except for one, teeny-tiny little detail

BARS ARE NOT PUBLIC PROPERTY!!!!! NEITHER ARE RESTAURANTS - NEITHER ARE AIRLINES, TRAINS, PRIVATELY OWNED VEHICLES OF BUSINESS!!

These places are privately owned. the public does not pay one nickel for rent/mortgage or anything else related to those businesses.

Privately owned businesses have every right to establish the smoking policies for the businesses that they own. Then if you don't want to do business with an owner who caters to smoker's, guess what - walk out and take your dollar to another business.

Oh my gosh - well that's it then. You have completely won the debate. Your personal observations (which I am sure are completely unbiased) far outweigh the work of time management specialists.

Get a life - you have no idea what your non-smoking collegues are doing at their desk.

Banning smoking in bars was a stupid thing. Not only because almost everyone who goes to bars smoke (even non-smokers smoke socially when they drink) but it's also bad for the business. Bars didn't have a choice apparently, because even with the many petitions from pretty much every bar in my area, the law still passed.

Go downtown in your city during the winter and look for the bars that have covered patios with big heaters. You will see that those bars get the most business. In fact, those outdoor heaters have been so successful that it's almost a requirement for a bar wanting to succeed to have some or risk going under.

You see, your personal rights are nil when you are in a public setting. Everything you do in that public setting can affect others also in that setting.

Ah, at last we get to the real reason for all the anti-smoker propaganda. You don't smoke, and you don't want to smell smoke, so others must do as you want!

Bars and restaurants are private property! Someone owns them and makes money from owning them. You and I are customers, not co-owners. So it is the place of the owner to decide which is more profitable for them: allowing smoking, prohibiting smoking, or allowing both in different areas. But you, apparently simply because you exist, believe you should have the ability to tell others what they can and cannot do, based on nothing more than whether or not you like it. Your weapon in this class warfare is government. Your battle is for control of others. Your cause is that you are superior to those who disagree with you.

How does it feel to be a god?

You say my personal rights are nil in a public setting, but in the same breath you speak of your rights to clean air and to walk into a privately-owned establishment without being exposed to smoke. I say my personal rights are still mine, and you have no right to declare them null and void because it suits you.

I say you are not superior to me; I say we are equals in society. I say you should have the freedom to live your life as you see fit, but not to live my life. I say you should be able to walk into a restaurant whose owner has deemed smoking to be prohibited, but I also say I should be able to walk into a restaurant where the owner has deemed smoking is to be allowed.

The real danger in your attitude is that you, despite your beliefs, are not superior to others. You may be able to win some battles that place your personal preferences ahead of others, but the day comes when others will place their personal preferences ahead of you. When that day comes, you might as well accept it, because I will not be there to support you. You were not there to support me. That is equality and justice.

Also...

You already have every bar and restaurant I know of closed too me and open to you. And yet you are still here complaining about smokers. Why? Could it be that this is not yet enough? What's next? Banning tobacco everywhere? Arresting people for being smokers? Executing people for being smokers? What more do you want?

Non-smokers live longer (in general) and are therefor more of a drain on society than smokers.

I try to be considerate when smoking, not blowing smoke at people etc, but I still have to put up with inconsiderate non-smokers broadcasting on their cell phones or their chilling looks of disdain.

Guess what. Everybody has an axe to grind.

I'm off for a cigarette.
