On Wednesday morning, Sept. 8th, NASA's Genesis space capsule will streak
over Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Utah, returning samples of the solar wind
to Earth. Sky watchers within 100 miles of the reentry path might be able
to see the fireball in broad daylight. The best place to be is northern
Nevada, where the fireball is expected to be brightest

New maps and data files just posted on Spaceweather.com may help observers
locate and track the capsule.

Maybe someone in these areas can take some pictures, and post them. Sure wish I was on the west cost to see it.

I hope the sample collection arrays weren't cracked open.

I guess it was parachute which opens from impact.

Below is a post I snagged off of Cowboy.

My Fear:

The capsule broke, therefore exposing our enviornment to solar dust. Yes actuall exposure from particles not being burned in the fall from the atmosphere. So what could that mean for us? I hope we don't become sick from new bacteria.

That is a legitimate concern for many probe missions that bring back samples, but in this case I would hazard that the risk is minimal at the very least.

a new germ?.....ok then.....lets all touch it and die.....jeesus your all paranoid sun particles cannot kill us unless its radioactive....might be harmful if its radio active.....

I stood on my rooftop on Salt lake City's Captital Hill to watch the re-entry, but couldn't see it. There were too many clouds on the horizon. I hope that there isn't too much contamination of the sample array. What a heartbreak for the science team if the samples got all cruddy.

I sincerely hope stardust fares better, cause that's the stuff that's harder to get. We can get stuff from the sun anytime.

LOL, that's sure there isn't any bacterias coming from sun. Everything in it and near it is heated and exposed to such radiation that nothing could withstand it.
So only way there could be bacterias in samples would be if there's some particles which aren't from solar wind. (and solar wind/radiation pressure continuously "pushs" small particles out from inner solar system)

What a pity.

Still, OK, that's how it is and these things sometimes happen........applications for the next try form an orderly line!

Also, bacteria is a lifeform, that'd mean ET's.
