The wimpy comet Elenin, which vaulted into the public spotlight as a so-called harbinger of doom, has met its own demise, and its remains won't be back for 12,000 years, NASA scientists say.

The comet made a swing through the inner solar system in recent months, coming closest to Earth on Oct. 16, but by that time all that was left were crumbs. The fate of comet Elenin, it seems, was sealed in September during its
closest approach to the sun.

Looks like everyone can rest easy now, and just wait for the Zombie Apocalypse.

Well...this is blatantly disinformation.
They want you to believe it has gone so when it appears in the skies you wont have time to run.

*Sarcasm"

Everyone knows it is an alien spaceship than can change invisible at the touch of a button.

*Sarcasm*

Elenin is clearly visable behind the sun...its not lens flare!!!!!

*Sarcasm*

Lets see what our believer friends can add to that crappy list of excuses

Awh, that's no fun

So what's the next celestial object on the list that might cause a cataclysmic event? If there even is one.

PRAISE BE.

I hope this subject is dropped for good now. Roll on the next doomsday scenario so I can roll my eyes at that too. Four billion years the planet's been around and no doubt survived worse than a piddly wee comet scooting past millions and millions of miles away. I suppose the 2012 stuff will reach fever pitch after New Year. I can't WAIT.

Now what?

What's next on the Gloom and Doom horizon? Oh wait, WWIII & the inevitable attack on Iran by Israel.
I was preferring the big squish by a Comet myself.

I guess beggars can't be choosers

"Perhaps a little homage to a classic Monty Python dead parrot sketch is in order," Yeomans said. "Comet Elenin has rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-comet."

This really does sum up those who refuse to believe it is not a threat and that it broke apart.

" it's not dead"

I found Elenin to bestill traveling the same route. It's not dead yet.

After many attempts to find any remains of Comet Elenin, they have been located. The first message came from Ernesto Guido, Giovanni Sostero, and Nick Howes. On their images, a small extended cloud with low surface brightness was visible.

Yeah ww3 actually being in the realm of possibilities makes it all the more unsettling.
Guess it's got to be the boring tradition doomsday scenario.
No cyborg zombies from a parallel time line for us

there was something about a mysterious cloud it left behind. so the fearmongering probably isn't just finished yet.

it would be good to see an actaul statement from NASA.

i do hate the news reports with NASA CONFIRM. then when you read it, it states a NASA scientist declares.......

i think a lot of ex nasa staff still declare themselves as NASA scientists. it could be some guy who worked for NASA 30years ago for a week.

Lol Or is Elenin undead now? "Elenin is dead. Long Live Elenin!"

It's Relief for a million bad fear theories and tactics beings laid to rest. This and the Iceland re-writing their constitution thread are refreshing bits of news.

Don Yeomans still very much works at NASA. Also there is nothing mysterious about the remnants. Elenin was composed of gases and dust. That's not going to just disappear because the comet broke apart.
