That goes back to the vibration theory of flight.
The surrounding molecules are vibrated such that the nucleus and electrons get all shook up.
Just as microwaves heat up water in food due to vibrating the molecules of water the ships
vibrate air which means high voltage and heating of surrounding air.
The problem I see with this is what is happening inside the ship.
If the mechanism is working to hold waves through the crew and ship there must be a region
of impasse and the infra red or glow happens far away from the secure inside.
Thus perhaps the thought of shields in place as apart from un captured mass active in
the nearby region.
