I can't believe the phrasing of these quotes. They are very degrading to the victim.

If ANY women is found is this manner, these things should NEVER be considered the first possibility. If a women is found dead, naked with her hands and feet bound, there is a 99% chance she was assaulted.

Does he treat all cases like this? How degrading to women!!!!! Jaycees kidnapper, also tried to say him and another victim were having a S&M relationship.

Even if these were by some slim chance real possibility, the way he phrased it was to humiliate the victim. He said "sort of erotic activity that blurred the line between pain and pleasure and pushed the boundaries of human sensual experience", he could have just said "consensual adult games".

Investigators were waiting Thursday to determine if a woman who died in the historic Spreckels mansion was murdered, took her own life, or somehow fell victim to a strange accident.

“We haven't even confirmed this has been a criminal matter,” said San Diego Sheriff's Capt. Tim Curran.

While they waited to classify the probe as a homicide or a more routine death inquiry, everyone seemed to agree on one thing: the puzzling circumstances surrounding the death of Rebecca Nalepa, also known as Rebecca Zahau.

“It's a very bizarre death, there's no doubt about it,” Curran said.

Detectives would not disclose a number of pertinent details in the case, from whether or not the only other person on the large oceanfront property heard noises or a struggle during the early-morning hours Wednesday to the current whereabouts of the homeowner, Arizona pharmaceuticals magnate Jonah Shacknai.

Other issues Curran would not comment on or said were not yet clear:

If there were signs of a struggle in the bedroom attached to the balcony where Nalepa died.
If search warrants had been served at other locations aside from the Spreckels property.
If Jonah Shacknai and his ex-wife were known to be at the hospital late Tuesday and early Wednesday with their ailing son.
If Nalepa was despondent in the hours before her death.

They also were awaiting results of an autopsy to determine the cause and time of death and whether or not she was sexually assaulted.

The county's medical examiner's office would not release details Thursday evening.

Judging by it's context in the article this was the reporters voice. Okay, so lets say it was a sex kink gone wrong. Brave? Fit? Totally nude. What do brave and fit have to do with it besides getting the journalist all hot and bothered. What if she weren't fit? What if she weighed 300 pounds and had hair on her back. Would she still be brave or would that sentence have been left out of the article all together?

edit: just saw someone else pointing the article out as satire. I certainly hope so.

It seems to me, based on the death of the child as well and the manner in which the woman died that this is a mob-style hit. A warning. This is what happens to the loved ones of someone who squeals. That or the sex kink gone wrong are the most plausible angles. If it were a revenge killing for the injury and death of the son she likely would have just "disappeared" or "gone on a long vacation" rather than being displayed in such a manner on their property. The way that she was found, if not a sex act gone wrong, is a message. Who would it be a message to--other potential girlfriends that might not watch the child closely enough in the future? Or a pharmaceutical CEO that might be privy to damaging information?

my mind keeps coming back to the kid and the stairs. I can remember past cases of abuse where that was the excuse only because it was easiest to believe but was far from the truth. I am thinking someone beat that child and then blamed it on a fall. As for the woman found hanging, well...that seems like a pretty personal crime. Someone wanted her degradation. Perhaps she thought too highly of herself due to her associations and someone sought to remind of her of her place. After all...would the lady of the house be treated in such a way or is an ignoble death like this designed for expendable arm candy.

One part of the story that is a fact is that a helicopter filmed the body with the orange cord next to her.

Why was she brought out to the front yard?

If the candlemass part of the story is accurate, could this have been some kind of sacrifice in hopes of saving the boy? Did the child get injured on the same stairs where the balcony is located?

By them adding in that ritual angle the door gets blown wide open for all sorts of possibilities. If there really was a ritual then there would be evidence right? An Altar, a circle, some incense...some kind of preparation. What were her religious affiliations? There was a full moon on the 15th and the 18th was the day of bad omens according to roman mythology.

Reporting from San Diego— The mysterious deaths of a 6-year-old boy and his father's girlfriend within the same week in wealthy Coronado, Calif., have left police puzzled, with one investigator saying that scientific evidence in the woman's death at the historic Spreckels mansion would ultimately determine what happened.

On Sunday, the mansion's owner, pharmaceutical executive Jonah Shacknai, announced that his son, Max, had died. The boy had been taken to the hospital six days earlier after falling down the grand staircase at the Ocean Boulevard mansion built in 1908.

The naked body of Shacknai's girlfriend, Rebecca Nalepa, 32, was found July 13 hanging by her neck from a balcony in the courtyard of the 27-room estate. Her hands and feet were bound.

Shacknai's brother, Adam, a guest at the home, told investigators that he found Nalepa and cut her down in hopes that she was still alive. The two were the only ones in the house at the time.

The lead investigator called the circumstances "bizarre" and declined to classify the death as a suicide or "a criminal incident."

As for the fatal fall of Max Shacknai, detectives would only say that they have found no direct connection between his death and that of Nalepa.

"Right now, we're treating it as an accident," a Coronado Police Department spokeswoman said.

No arrests have been made and no suspects identified in Nalepa's death.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating Nalepa's death because the Coronado Police Department does not have its own homicide unit.

Coronado, with a population of about 24,000, sits across the bay from San Diego and is best known for its Navy bases and swanky beachfront hotels.

After he fell, Max Shacknai was rushed to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where his father and mother — Jonah Shacknai's ex-wife, Dina, who also lives in Coronado — kept a vigil.

On Sunday, Shacknai announced the boy's death via email.

"His loving, kind and vibrant spirit will forever be in our hearts and those whom he touched every day," Jonah Shacknai's email said. "The loss to our families, Max's many friends of all ages, and teammates, and the community is immeasurable."

Meanwhile, the San Diego County medical examiner has sealed the results of an autopsy on Nalepa, also known by her maiden name, Rebecca Zahau. A certified ophthalmic technician, she left her job in Scottsdale, Ariz., last year to spend more time with Shacknai and his children, authorities said.

Investigators are interviewing people about Nalepa's final days.

"I think this is one of those cases where the forensics will determine the case," said Sgt. Roy Frank of the sheriff's homicide unit.

Investigators declined to say where Jonah Shacknai, 54, was when Nalepa's body was found.

"We've spoken to Jonah and other members of the family," Frank said. "Everybody has been completely cooperative."

Within hours of the discovery of Nalepa's body — as news helicopters circled overhead — attorney Paul Pfingst, former two-term district attorney, now one of the region's top criminal defense attorneys, showed up at the mansion. Pfingst would only say that he's been hired to represent someone in the case.

In announcing the death of his son, Jonah Shacknai suggested memorial contributions be made to the Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation in Scottsdale. Shacknai has served as president and director of the foundation, which helps special-needs children.

Shacknai, a lawyer, was once a top congressional aide involved with health issues. His hugely successful company, Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp., which he founded in 1988, is headquartered in Scottsdale. The company markets acne and anti-wrinkle treatments Restylane and Dysport, a competitor to Botox, in the United States, Canada and Europe.

The family splits its time between Scottsdale and the Coronado mansion, which was built in 1908 by sugar baron and philanthropist John D. Spreckels, who once owned the Hotel del Coronado and San Diego's newspapers. The oceanfront house is listed as a national historic site.

In his Sunday email, Shacknai asked reporters to respect "the privacy of our families during this time of grieving for Max."
