I don't understand why people feel the need to bash the Engineers (besides the ones who ok'd the buildings)?

Maybe there is some misunderstanding going on, or just what I like to call "uneducated Know-it-alls?"

(Don't know anything about radiation, let alone Atomic powerplants, but will assume laziness on the Engineers/goverments part.)

First off.

The core(s) NEED to be cooled down to the right temperature. If not, a "cement pinebox" won't work and it would be wasted time and effort. Add to that the fact that they would be creating a worse problem, as they would only be covering it from themselves. They wouldn't be able to work or monitor on it like they have thus far. In theory, if not cooled down prior to containment vessel application it would just crack and release radiation all over again.

Another real problem is that they placed it so close to the ocean, it's really hard to say they won't meet water about a foot down. An underwater drill could be the only thing that would possibly work. They need to get under it to enclose the entire area. If not, it would be very much a time waste. The Russians did indeed have problems, but not on this scale. This is completely unpresidented as the placement of the plant has everything at a stand-still. If they cement it off, what makes anyone think another EQ/giant wave won't come along and slide it into the ocean? Now THAT would be adding insult to injury!

The situation gets worse when you compound those problems with where the problem areas are on the map. It's in the dead center of Japan. For years on end only the southern and northern areas will be occupied. Now IF there is indeed some sort of coverup, it would be about the level of contamination or the core position (all over ground or intact?) We already caught them BSing waay before when they said "no, no worries. We don't need evac's" then a day later, "everyone back up a few miles."

Although I believe they were only hoping for the best and it didn't turn out that way. I thought there might have been some sort of conspiracy at first glance, but as I dive deeper in the subject matter I've grown to realize that there isn't one. Just a bunch of people confused as all get-out as to how to stop this particular scenario. They know it's of a worse-case scenario, they've said it and admitted it. There was more of a "cover-up" with the BP gulf "spill" imo.

One worry I have had though. WHAT IF it was in fact bad enough to destroy the whole country? Could the government just come out and say "hey everyone, get out. We aren't coming back!" If they did, wouldn't their currancy be void? How can another country accept tender that is "dead?"

....If so, I guess it's still possible there is a conspiracy in there somewhere. They can't tell everyone to GTFO for fear of that possibility, therefore the Japanese people have to GTFO on their own without the warning while their money is still worth something. It would be terribly hard for that many people to relocate without any funds. Maybe their government is doing it's best to prop up the economy while giving time to the "smart" people to get out? Just a thought, but how possible would it actually be?

I doubt that there is a conspiracy. It is more to their obstinate human nature and fear of being blamed for the disaster so they make mistakes after mistakes in trying to shift the weight of the responsibility away from themselves. They should have been truthful from the beginning so that the intelligent minds from around the world can try to find a solution in dealing with it before it disintegrated into the present bad state of affairs it is in now. The bad nature of japanese people is that they think that they are more evolved and look upon themselves as a higher breed of humans that is above others. If you study them carefully you will find deep and hidden sides to their nature.
If you look carefully, you will sense an air of superiority in their attitude. Most japanese feel that they are the direct descendants of the creator god because their emperor is fabled to be of the a direct descendant in the lineage according to the religious teachings.

Their pride and their arrogance in thinking that they are capable of controlling and dealing successfully with the situation has been making things go from bad to worst. You may think that you know them, but there is the hidden side to them that may cause you your life if they come to reveal it. They show their courteous side but the demonic side of them is not something that you want to experience. Why do you think that they want their woman to be submissive and obedient? Their demonic side was displayed in their treatment of others in the asian countries during WW2

I just found this letter by ivor paul in the japan times-

Dangerously unstable technology
There was even an item in The Japan Times describing healthy villagers living happily in the shadow of Chernobyl. The Ukraine and Belarus hospital wards that are full of horribly sick and deformed children are a testament to the dreadful consequences of atomic radiation.
Is it not verging on madness to invest in such a dangerously unstable technology, producing deadly waste that remains radioactive for thousands of years, that is multiplying day by day with no known way of disposing of it?

A lethal dose of Cesium for dogs is about 3,800 μCi , 1 μCi is equal to ~37,000 Bq
12,500 Bq is less than half of 1 μCi so I think people are safe for now

The problem is the build up of ingested and radiation in the environment over a period of time. Who can say that daily intake of radiation through food,in the air, water and through the skin is not harmful over a period of time.

Cesium does build up in plant tissues but it does not accumulate in the human body, it is quickly flushed out via sweat or urination

There is no ‘safe’ exposure to radiation

Radiation from Japan is now detectable in the atmosphere, rain water and food chain in North America. Fukushima reactors are still out of control and hold 10 times more nuclear fuel than there was at Chernobyl, thousands of times more than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The official refrain is, “No worries here, perfectly harmless.” Our best scientists of the previous century would be rolling over in their graves.

There is a lot of misinformation(disinformation) out there

They can not seal and bury the Japanese reactors.

They will only china syndrome when the sealed and buried reactors run out of water.
When that happens because they are on the coast with a shallow water table there will be massive radioactive steam explosions.

The only thing that can be done is to keep cooling them till they can be defueled(what they plan to do)

Then the site will have to be decontaminated to the best level they can be and then sealed(they plan to build containment building over the old damaged reactor buildings)

Even of they defuel and clean the site the reactors that melted will never be able to be used again.

One- the building are contaminated to badly to ever clean to a safe level for the reactor ever to run again.
and the hydrogen explosions damaged the buildings badly and will make the cleanup harder to do

Two- they were old reactors to begin with and the cost of cleaning and repairing them would be more then building new ones.

They are going to do the same thing to these reactor as was done with the Three Mile Island reactor that melted down.

That is correct that there is no such thing as safe exposure, but radiation is forever present. Its not like we went from a rad free world to this Fukushima disaster. But these levels are low are do not pose any sort of life threat on human beings. Also, Fukushima is a completely different type of plant than Chernobyl so its not beneficial to compare the two.

How safe are the nuclear plants around the world when the inevitable mega earthquakes are appearing in this time of earth changes?

Japan's disastrous earthquake and tsunami that crippled its coastal nuclear reactors have reopened old questions for California: How big could the next inevitable earthquake be, and how safe are the state's nuclear power plants that now produce more than 15 percent of our electricity?

The arrogant and conceited attitude and mentality of most of the decision makers in the seats of power will cause the deaths of millions or billions if they continue in their present path. By the time they admit that they are wrong, it is too late for many of the poor victims of their bad foresight and decision. We have to start removing those who forcing people to bend to their will in their quest for money and power.

TOKYO: A survivor of the Chernobyl disaster says people exposed to radiation from Japan's crippled nuclear plant will spend the rest of their lives fearing the "bombshell" of cancer and other dire illnesses.
"The Fukushima accident is like the twin brother of Chernobyl," said Pavel Vdovichenko, 59, who had already accepted an invitation from Japanese anti-nuclear groups to join a rally marking a quarter-century since Chernobyl.

"People in the two places have to suffer long-time hardship," Vdovichenko, a Russian, told AFP through an interpreter. "People in Chernobyl suffered from cancer after the accident. A similar thing may happen to Fukushima."

NOW is the time to push the truth to the people of japan and the world, and take the necessary action to stop the continued operations of all the dangerous nuclear plants.

The long-term health effects of Chernobyl remain unclear 25 years after the most serious nuclear accident in history, according to a former World Health Organisation (WHO) official.

A full assessment of the public health impact has been thwarted by poorly co-ordinated research on residents in areas close to the plant, and should be carried out with funding from the European commission, said Keith Baverstock, a former health and radiation adviser to the WHO.

He said research had been frustrated by pro- and anti-nuclear lobby groups who had turned the debate over health risks into a battleground. Link:-

You were in the area around Chernobyl for the first time eight years ago. What struck you most back then?

I was especially struck by the abandoned villages and especially the city of Pripyat - especially the schools and kindergartens there. The presence of playthings, books and pictures belonging to the kids made the catastrophe more perceptible. It helped me understand the situation that must have unfolded in 1986. That was a meaningful experience and one that I've never forgotten.

In mid-March, you were in the region again. What is the mood like? Do the people there see themselves as victims?

In some manner of speaking, yes, but they also may not be so eager to explain that to a foreigner. I sensed that emotions were very high among the soldiers and fire department personnel who were ordered to work on the damaged reactor directly after the explosion. They feel as though they were deceived. And they were. Link:-

The two man-made isotopes of strontium—Sr-89 and Sr-90—are among the most dangerous products of nuclear fission to human and animal health. Both are “bone-seekers,” chemically similar to calcium, that collect in bone and marrow, where they are known to cause cancer. They are particularly dangerous to the growing bones of fetuses and children. quote/
