Injection wells. Suprise, surprise, surprise.
Not.

Great investigatin Muzzy and Dragonlover. This is why I am interested in the small, mid-contintental quakes. Because very often I'm finding they aren't natural. Obviously there's mining in the area. And now it looks like mining activity, the injection, is a major suspect.

Muzzy's source was the USGS. So, they are a good place to start your search for any information you may want.

This is a swarm. Don't jump on me about the label. The USGS called the 12 quakes in 2001 a swarm. Count to this point in this current activity, 11. So, it's a swarm.

What's really interesting is that it's in Colorado. Colorado is one of the first places that had a confirmed swarm caused by waste water fluid injection. It's a known fact that injection causes quakes.

I wish I had the patience to sit and read the whole USGS study but I cannot. I really only want to know one thing. Where's the injection well. If anyone hunts it down, maybe you could give us a location and maybe a shot of it from Google Earth. Well, I guess two things. Is the injection well still operational.

At this point I'm still sitting on the fence. It may be natural.
I still think maybe there's giant underground meth labs in the old mine shafts. Someone messed up.
Maybe I'm off base there. Maybe. Maybe I'm watching too much of the TV series "Breaking Bad."

The Rocky Mountain arsenal was the culprit in the 60's. The area is now under the US superfund for clean up of the most toxic dump sites in the US. This site used to produce chemical weapons for the military.

I suppose I'm sitting on the fence because I can't rule out the reservoir. There's a drought in the States. The water levels may have changed drastically which would change stress loads.

Before I was watching "Breaking Bad", I watched a whole series of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. We must get all the facts first. Then use the process of elimination. At the moment, there are several suspects, including nature.

1. Natural
2. Mining
3. Reservoir
4. Injection Wells
5 Meth lab
6. Secret underground military test

It is sheer insanity to inject chemical weapons underground.
Did they think they'd stay down there forever?

Remember at the end of the Planet of the Apes. The original.
I think Taylor's words are prophetic,
"You maniacs...

www.youtube.com...

Must add. Moments ago, we got the 12th quake, 3.9M. I don't think it's going to stop. This is an ongoing event.
Please don't think of these quakes as aftershocks. This could be building. Hopefully, not.

Another thing about mid-continental quakes is that they are felt far away from the epicenter. Check out the felt map.

earthquake.usgs.gov...

One more tidbit. According to a fishing report, "With water levels fluctuating often, boaters are warned to watch for unknown obstacles in the water."

Just would like to add that I have been watching GEE on TA.T25A which is basically where the 5.3 in Colorado happened and noticed that about every 12 minutes, there is a seismic event. For the most part, they are getting smaller. Occasionally, one will break the 12 minute cycle, but I thought it was interesting to make note of.

Any thoughts?

Now La Veta! I think Shell is or has been snooping around there and got some of the locals all fired up. I know they have been working on Sheep Mountain and looking to maybe start on Little Sheep. Don't know if this would have any bearing on the quakes.
One of my sons lives near Pavillion, Wy. His water is artesion so he says he has no problem but I still worry about him and the wife and kids!
Robin I have followed the Arkansas swarms and you and Susan have been terrific. You have earned a seat in heaven as far as I can tell.

This one?

Can you be a little more specific about the connection between the two events please?

ETA: Found the other one now

In what way is this connected to Colorado?

I've taken that data and added the recent events 22/23rd and created this interactive map.
On the map I've marked the 2001 swarm quakes as "rl" and the recent events as "ad"

The recent events are generally south west of 2001 but there are a few that are intermingled NE of the 5.3

S Colorado EQs interactive map

the last Mag 5 in the area was 11 miles (18km) to the SW in New Mexico.

BTW the list on the left is sorted by date oldest at top. I should have included the date in the "label" of the GPS programme, but it can get messy when you open it in Google Earth.
I'll make another version.

Damn I had closed the GPS Vis window without saving the paramaters

Should be able to at least see the date on the side list now in the above link
Try this one, direct link for Google earth kml the text only comes up when you hover your cursor over the icon

Now have some sound to go with that.

Colorado 5.3 2011-08-23.zip

There is a .flac file and a .wav file - discard the one you don't want. .flac is smaller. Winamp can playthem.
