Navy intercepts Argentinian warship near British waters

www.telegraph.co.uk

The Royal Navy has intercepted an Argentinian warship near British waters in an apparent escalation of the row over the Falkland Islands.

Destroyer HMS York spotted the vessel around ten miles inside the disputed “oil zone” around the South Atlantic islands.

The British crew had to radio the Argentinian ship, a smaller corvette named ARA Drummond, to demand that it change its course.

It is believed that the Drummond was spotted sailing alongside a French fleet before it broke away and headed for the disputed zone.

Under international law, the 15 miles of sea surrounding the Falklands are officially British waters.

The ship was spotted around 65 miles from the islands, in an area of sea called the “conservation zone”.

While the Argentinian warship has said it navigated there by mistake and carried on with their exercise. The British MoD insisted that the radio communication had been “friendly”. UK has now sent a submarine and HMS York to patrol the area.

Why was the ship sailing with the French navy?

I wonder if France are going to join Argentina's side.

That's laughable, funny but impossible because.. you know, the whole EU thing.. and the solidarity clause built into the Lisbon treaty..

Even if the French wanted to, the worst they could do is not offer any help..

Then if it got bad enough, the EU could force them to back up the Brits.

I agreee with you , however I feel that any intervention by UK military will not be a very popular move in the eyes of a large portion of the world.
Any military interjection by the UK or the US will be seen as agressive and empirical in the majority of countries in the world regardless if they are justified or not. A #ty position for the UK in all senses. I say we just let the Argentiniand posture all they want and continue with our business. They do not have the cahonas to attempt anything on a military scale as they must know that they would be anihilated within 24 hours. It is all just posturing and that is all that it will come to.. Just ignore them like you do a silly child.

Looks like this things escalating pretty quickly. Is it in the MSM?

I know
, was just joking.

But the EU didn't stop them from selling missiles and stuff to the Argentinians.

Empires are over

Britain should return those islands to Argentina, and if the people there right now don't want to become Argentinians then they can catch the first ship back to the U.K.

I can't see the Americans getting involved. I can see the Argentinians and the British getting into shooting if oil is confirmed.

The UK public will pay for a war so that rich people via corporate fronts reap the rewards. Just like Iraq.

The RN submarine patrolling the South Atlantic alone will ensure that the Argies dont try anything, at least by sea.

In that case I suppose you are also getting on the first ship back to the UK?

Probably just seeing how quick we will react to anything out of the ordinary...not a mistake and not an act of aggression. Similar to all those Russian planes that get escorted away from the UK.

This incident happened on the 28th of January.

I call it an incident, but it was simply two ships passing in the night in international waters. And after a friendly tete-a-tete they sailed off with nothing happening at all.

Bit boring, that. I think 99% of contributors would've preferred they started shooting at each other.

It looks to me that south America is aligning with the Argentinians. That means a formidable foe for the UK. A little flame burning their bottom.

Like the Haitians driving out the French, let the Falkland Islands & Argentinian people do the same. Let them fend for themselves and wish the UK were there to pick them up when they fall.

If you want to find the areas of the world with the thickest London influence right now make note of any region with suddenly emerging oil resources. The Falkland Islands are certainly not the only booty of last resort. Their reserve is well known and documented for decades.
