"Whether it's an Asian triad gang or whether it's a bikie gang, that legislation is all embracing, it's umbrella legislation and it gives police and the special examiner extraordinary powers." Those coercive powers include the right to detain and question suspects without charge.

news.smh.com.au...

Australian Bikie gangs having been waging a violent turf war, that have included drive by shootings, fire bombings and murder. They are considered organised crime gangs dealing in drugs, prostitution etc.
This has been going on for decades, in the 80's there was a massacre shoot out on Fathers day between rival gang members.

On the weekend at Sydney Qantas terminal a gang member was bashed to death in front of 50 petrified onlookers. The brawlers got away but were arrested later.
As a result there are calls for machine guns to be present at all Australian airports.
This is the media darling at the moment current on all Australian news stations.

Rival gangs include, the Comancheros, the Banditos, Hells angels, Vikings and a few others.
Police are wanting to ban all biker gangs across the entire nation.

Do all these gang members have to be classified criminals? are some just lovers of bikes?
Will banning gangs be an imposition on civil liberties?
They have been banned in the state of South Australia and has this successfully curbed criminal activity?
Would this be Australa's version of the 'patriot act'?
How else can the extreme crime be tackled if at all?

The Aussie cops need to watch out for the Fit Freaks, as I know they are a bad bunch.... These guys are clever and very clandestine. They drive little Honda economy cars that are called Fits in Japan and the U.S. or Jazz elsewhere.... They, like bikers are too rare to kill and too weird not too.

Right.

Me and the boys were totally going to go out and bash in some skulls but since there is a ban on "gangs" I guess we'll have to go find something else to do.

This is in the top 25 for pointless legislation.

so what does this mean?
you can't go on group rides anymore?
or you can't wear leathers with the same patches on them?

who's to say that me and 10 of my sport bike friends out on a ride on a warm sunday morning through wine country are gang members? (i know we're talking aussie territory here)

that's going to be a tough one to pull off.

They've done it in 1 state, but I;m hoping some Assies can help me out as to whether it made any difference to crime levels? And as you say, what are the parameters for the ban? What defines you as a Biker gang?

When is a "gang" not a gang....when it's a "club" and vice-versa?

Some of the Hells Angels are actually quite smart and would find a legal loophole to evade this I'm sure.

The only way this could be dealt with is to approach it as criminal activity. Once you start trying to ban motorcyle gangs you also ban the legitimate clubs and how can you ban one kind of club and not another?

Dumb scared reaction by ignorant authorities if you ask me.

I wonder what sort of uproar there would be if they try and ban Ulysses
motorbike club.?

hardly an orginized crime gang.

Any lady or gentleman who is over the age of 40, and who holds a current motorcycle licence, or who is a regular partner of such a person, and over 40, is eligible to join. Until you reach the grand old age of 50, you will be a "junior" member, but with full membership rights and privileges. It's just that you might have to help some of the "seniors" off their machines sometime!

But laws are laws and if you ban 1 you have to ban them all.

They need machine guns, to stop people brawling?
A bit of overkill don't you think?
Or do they just want machine guns, to oppress the people more?

Police are wanting to ban all biker gangs across the entire nation.
Because of one brawl, one bashing, they want to ban ALL of something?
So then they should just ban ALL cars then right?
Because cars kill more people than that.
What about cigarettes, they kill more people than anything?
Oh and fast food, which is responsible for most heart disease and diabetes?

This sounds like an excuse to bring in automatic weapons and an excuse for the authorities being unable to deal properly with the organised crime of SOME motorcycle gangs.

Sack all the police chiefs and get someone who knows what they're doing and how to do it!

THanks Nerbot, Thats close to it yes. Really there is no reason they cant target and punish the crime. They did say it wont matter if your an asian gang either, so will my tai chi class be arrested?

I understand the want of individuals in ridding a Nation of Gangs, however, I do believe that if you get rid of one particular group, another will simply arise in its place.

Take for instance La Cosa Nostra, AKA The Sicilian Family. In areas where the Federal Government has cracked down on these members within the United States, the Russian Mob has begun to take hold. If you think the Paisons were bad news, well, at least many of them lived by a code, whereas the Russians are just plain crazy.

Often times the "Gangs" that arise to replace a fallen group, end up being far worse than the original organization.

Lets see, outlaw gangs are going to follow the Law!
Yea that's it , make another law that will not stop anything but normal every day people who are out on a ride and stopped and held because why?
There where more than one riding at the same time!

Yep this will fix the problem.

With the Russians, it just proves that 'gangs' cant be banned, you need to tackle individuals and their crimes. I hear the Ruskis are causing havoc in the US and UK, or is that jus a good gangstar flick theme?

Lets see Hells Angels and Banditos fight and kill each other on a regular basis. I think its safe to assume that they aren't going to care about breaking dress code law.

Off topic.

I don't see the big deal about these guys. A few may deal drugs and weapons to each other within the club, but unless you disrespect them they pretty much won't bother you.

Except in the last 2 weeks there has been a drive by shooting, bashing, torching almost every day. They are the organised crime lords in oz at the mo.

If you say biker 'gangs' are terrorist then you should say that the white collar criminals are terrorist too. They also have their little clubs and meetings and the crimes are organized.

Id like to see the airport security made accountable for the detah of the bokers brother last sunday.

how hard is it to put a few rounds into the air to disperse the WEAK COWARDS who think that 15 against one or two is a fair fight, especially when they are beating the head in of one of them with steel bollards.

nobody went in to help.

why didnt the air hostesses contact police at the first sign of trouble while they were still onboard to have an armed police escort off the airport premises?

if they banned them, I couldnt care less.'

In my books they are all scum who run drugs all over the country and deal with illegal weapons.

to hell with them.
