Somebody?

This is the original pic:
marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov...

... and after some photoshop (just modified the channel levels):

www.spotsys.biz...
and zooming on that area an x spot??
.

Somebody at JPL marked that rock with an "X" ... Any thoughts?? The white arrow was me...

EDITED to convert those huge images to links. They were screwing up the page layout.

You are just zooming in too far and looking at artifacts created by the JPEG compression.

Look around more you'll find other crosses, checkerboard areas, and all sorts of little things. Try it with any jpg image.

Heh, Richard is just upset that Phil Plait nailed him so well in this page at BadAstronomy.com.

Space.com then posted an article about it which was picked up by CNN. Poor old Hoagland feels all under attack. He put himself in that situation by relying on junkscience though.

I agree with Kano on both counts. The rock is too far away to blow up for any detail.

And Hoagland, jeez I'm surprized he hasn't stated that all the rocks have the same 19.5 deg mystical tetrahedral angle yet.
