It is worth considering that these are exercises to 'evoke' protest, or perhaps that may infer more subtlety than the architects deserve, maybe someone hopes to 'provoke' an incident, furthering the casus belli to impose even more stringent restriction.

In either case, the option of redress is the key missing element. When we devolved to the point of requiring 'registration' of intent to protest publicly, we have created a situation whereby any escalation or incident can be said to be caused by 'conspiracy' to create a public nuisance. Its a synthetic construct preemptively giving freedom to charge criminal intent to the outcome and it's participants.

Eventually this should be challenged, but to whom can the challenge be directed? The government, which provides the 'privilege' of bringing suit, will not deign to allow themselves to be the target of the challenge. The constant 'threat' invoked by those who believe that free speech must be confined are all immune, they cannot be compelled to answer for this practice.

It's getting to the point where the only real challenge they might face would be a national strike. We are so well divided and cross purposes with the partisan illusion that I can't see this ever occurring while the talking heads are out there spinning reality for those possessed by the 'consumer of news' spirit.

Another article
"Adam Jung, an organizer for Tent State University, mocked the city's allocation of the protest zone for demonstrators at the southeast corner of the arena's parking lot, near Seventh Street and the Aurora Parkway. Nonetheless, he said, the demonstration site would be the location in which hundreds -- or thousands -- of protesters would converge on once they're booted out of City Park and they begin the 2-and-a-half-mile trek to the Pepsi Center.

"We have felt that the city's stance on this issue was based on their desire to suppress the demonstrations and any message that exposes the Democratic Party's refusal to end the war," Jung said as another protester, Karen McGuire, clad in full Revolutionary War regalia, played the "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" on a fife.

"But we were not seeing the big picture. The city of Denver does not oppose free speech. They love free speech so much they just want to protect and secure it with razor wire and caging. Because of their passion for the First Amendment the city has provided one place for demonstrators to be overnight -- the freedom cage. Each night demonstrators will take the freedom cage and transform it into the 'Freedomville Shantytown.' "

The freedom cage! I love it.

In other words there is no free speech in the rest of the convention.

Could this be construed to also mean that unless the politicians giving speeches don't first go join the crowd in the cage...er, uh..."designated area" then they can't say what they honestly & truthfully think either?...

So then the truth comes out, even if only by proxy! The politicians really don't say the truth either...Otherwise they'd be in cages just like everyone else. History has already shown here in America that Presidents that really try to help the People wind up getting shot! At this rate, Bush will live forever...

Ladies and Gentlemen step right up see for yourself an actual free speech zone. See and hear shocking and appalling words freely expressed in a ghastly orgy of thought and criticism. Step right up and watch the monkeys whine about their rights and cry about how they are mistreated!!
Waaaa Waaaaa I want my rights well boo hoo into the zone with you!!
