So today because of some scheduling conflicts I had to go pick up my nephew from his school. I havent done this before, and his parents put me on the
pickup list so that I could go get him.
So I get to the school fully expecting them to ask me who I was and to show some ID.
What happened?
NOTHING...
My nephew gets off the bus and comes over to me I tell his teacher I am taking him home and she says "ok"
I was thinking WTF? I could be anyone! A stalker, a cerial killer, a child molester, ANYONE. WTF lady? Do our children NOT deserve some security in
this world? I mean seriously. I know I don't look like a dangerous guy, and the truth was that I am his uncle and everything was on the up and
up...
But cmon some security in this day and age is required and expected. I mean Shesh oh Pete! I told my sister what had went on and she is furrious! This
isnt right people. Strangers are allowed to go to any school and pick up kids? WTF?!?
This is wrong! Ask me for some positive identification, ask me to prove that I am who I say I am and I am not some sicko bastard here to exploit
children. I want my nephew (the lil brat he is) to be safe and secure. Now I gotta worry bout this kid being picked up by god knows who?
i know how you feel, kinda, at my school, there are police officers everywhere outside, so nothing like that can happen, its on the inside that its
lacking, smoking pot, IN THE HALL, watching porn on library computers, its just insane, we need strip searches at the door, and parental locks on the
computers.
They should take it very seriously. I was an asst. director of a preschool with about 300 little students as well as vbs asst. dir. with 1500
students. We never faltered on the security issue. Whoever picked up the child had to have either the picked tag or a tag from the office.
But what pissed me off so much were the parents (or someone the parents sent) who would come in to pick up their kid without their tag or tag from the
office and pitch a screaming fit at the classroom door because we wouldn't release the child. Security was all fine for them until they had to be
"inconvenienced" with a trip out to the car or the office.
With that said, and I don't know what grade your nephew is in, but they get way too lazy with it at the elementary level. I don't know why. At my
1st graders school, you have to send a note and wait at the office for him. The staff is really good about it.
Maybe it's time for a few parents to show up at the school board meetings and voice some concerns.
what gets me about this is that no one at this school has ever seen me before. Just because my nephew positively idetified me as Uncle Matt does it
mean I am HIS uncle? I mean seriously?!? All the kids around here call me Uncle Matt. (I try and correct them)
I just think they need to be a lot more carefull especially with young children.
If that was ME...I would collect the child, take him to the car, return to the teacher and demand their details. I would then ask to see the
headmaster (principal) and kick up one hell of a fuss, in front of everyone else to boot making other parents, relatives and prospective child
abducters aware of a serious issue!
Actions = reactions = changes.
Not right!
These kind of actions are the only way to get the message across sometimes, remember it's your flesh and blood you have to protect them (and others)
ANY way you see fit.
Why wait for the day there really IS an abduction to emphasise the issue?
