Even for the once-notorious Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, it may have been a first: Two men were arrested on Tuesday after pushing a corpse, seated in an office chair, along the sidewalk to a check-cashing store to cash the dead man’s Social Security check, the police said.

When Virgilio Cintron, 66, died at his apartment at 436 West 52nd Street recently, his roommate and a friend saw an opportunity to cash his $355 check, the police said.

They did not go about it the easy way, the police said, choosing a ruse that resembled the plot of “Weekend at Bernie’s,” a film about two young men who prop up their dead employer to pretend that he is alive.

Oh man that's funny. I can see it now, they're watching Weekend at Bernie's 2 and a lightbulb goes off over their heads. It flickers for a moment, then dies, then gets tapped and lights back up a little.

Weekend at Bernie's was the first thing that came to mind when I read about this. One must really wonder what these men would have done if they reached the store and while wheeling this body along.

They did it all wrong. They needed big sunglasses, a Hawaiian shirt (despite it being mid January) and a margarita with a straw taped to his lip.

I love the bit about the crowd gathering outside as they tried to push the desk chair into the check cashing place. I bet they were thinking the same thing. "What the hell is he doing".
