Isaac Daniel calls the tiny Global Positioning System chip he's embedded into a line of sneakers "peace of mind." He wishes his 8-year-old son had been wearing them when he got a call from his school in 2002 saying the boy was missing. The worried father hopped a flight to Atlanta from New York where he had been on business to find the incident had been a miscommunication and his son was safe.

Days later, the engineer started working on a prototype of Quantum Satellite Technology, a line of $325 to $350 adult sneakers that hit shelves next month. It promises to locate the wearer anywhere in the world with the press of a button. A children's line will be out this summer.

"We call it a second eye watching over you," Daniel said.

I think everyone saw this coming.
It fails to surprise me anymore.
People are willing to go too any length,to feel "secure" nowdays.
But while they are protecting us from the "bad guys",whos protecting us from them?
This is becoming a world where people will willingly hold their arm out for a chip.

just to add to this

It's the latest implementation of satellite-based navigation into everyday life — technology that can be found in everything from cell phones that help keep kids away from sexual predators to fitness watches that track heart rate and distance. Shoes aren't as easy to lose, unlike phones, watches and bracelets.

What's apparent is that Kelli Kennedy, author of the article, is a tard.

You'd think that AP would have some modicum of screening for technical accuracy but apparently they don't. You'd also think they had a cadre of technically apt reporters, one of whom might be sent to report on what is basically a technical subject. Nope.

When you see her calling the PCB a 'chip', you should realize she doesn't know the difference between an integrated circuit and a potato chip.

Seriously, the thing's either a stunted GSM cell phone or a two-way pager with a GPS part attached to it. You're dialing a service he's set up and is charging you 20 bucks a month for when you hit the button. Conversely, you can call the phone and query the GPS coordinates.

If you don't keep your sneakers charged, it will quit working.

This is basically the same thing as this...www.duncans.tv..., only with the phone casing removed, along with the keyboard, display, speaker and microphone. Then you stick it in a shoe. Mystery solved. No "chip". Lady Misinformed from AP led you astray on that one.
