Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov is not inclined to overly exaggerate the seriousness of the airborne incident at the Indra-2005 Russian-Indian anti-terror war games, when an Indian mortar landed next to the stands from which Russian and Indian top military officials were watching the airborne exercises

The mortar system landed just metres from Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov and his Indian counterpart while they watched the exercises. The mortar system, parachuted from an Indian aircraft, was shown on Russian television as it approached the ground near the platform where Ivanov and Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee were sitting, Itar-Tass reported.

Ivanov later brushed off the incident and praised the Indian Air Force for such accuracy. “Today an artillery system of India’s airborne forces landed right between two sand-dunes which is the ideal concealment from the enemy. So I raise my cap to Indian pilots,” Ivanov said, Itar-Tass reported.

This seems like it was not planned. It was very close but no one got physically hurt. The Russian and Indian officials just happened to choose the wrong spot to observe the games from and it almost went wrong...
