An explosion in front of a store in San Francisco has severally injured one woman. Police have evacuated several blocks of the Crocker Galleria area.
SAN FRANCISCO — An explosion injured a woman and set a clothing store on fire Friday in the downtown shopping district.

Firefighters and police evacuated several blocks around the store in the Crocker Galleria area, said fire spokesman Peter Howes.

A witness told KCBS radio that a woman was engulfed in flames from the blast which shattered the Ralph Lauren store's windows just before 10 a.m. Another witness said the blast seemed to have originated under the sidewalk.

This is a developing story and local police have not given any statements as to the cause. Very few casualties are noted and the local subway system, BART, which has a station nearby has reported all train are all right.

The woman that was injured is being listed in serious condition, but was reported ingulfed in flames. Current media reports indicate that the bomb squad is sweeping the area.

However the local utility is stating that the explosion may be in one of thier vualts, but the cause is unknown at this time. However, the sidewalk was raised 6 inches up.

There is now an unconfirmed report of a suspicious package at the Federal Building in the downtown area.

Another witness said the blast seemed to have originated under the sidewalk.

That together with the woman being engulfed in fire sounds alot like a gas problem.

Then the utility company also being involved from the start totaly pushes in that direction.

Bombs are presure killers, not fire starters or flaming blasts.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An underground electric transformer exploded in San Francisco's central financial district on Friday, injuring at least one woman and prompting police to close several city blocks, officials said.

"The manhole blew up," said Maria Chapital, an administrative assistant who witnessed the explosion from across the street. "Something blew up under the sidewalk."

"It felt like a truck hit the building," she told Reuters, saying she saw dislodged pavement and flames on the awning of the Ralph Lauren store in central San Francisco.

Windows in the store were also blown out when transformer blew in an underground electrical vault.

"It appears the explosion did occur within the vault. Exactly what caused the explosion we don't know yet," said Paul Moreno, a spokesman for PG&E.
