Strange Aircraft I heard last friday

While i was sitting in class last friday I heard this loud jet go by, it was the second of the day. The first one i visually saw, it was flying pretty low. It flew by and made alot of noise. The second one however (about an hour later) was way louder but it was only intermitant. It would be all loud, then stop for about 2 seconds, then get loud again. I was wondering If there are any aircraft which become silet like that then just start right back up again.

Maybe it's a fighter lighting afterburners then going to idle then shifting to afterburners again?

How many times did it do it in a row? and did it sound stationary or did the sound recede like it was getting farther away??

yes tell me more was it small large was it a deep drumming sound that almost made the ground shake or was it almost lighter. was it performing any turns fast or slow

i am meerly curious ....

variations in exhaust nozzle direction... fluctuating wind speed and preasure

there are a few reasons why the sound can dip and rise

I could hear it then the sound would disappear, this happened 3 times I belive, and no it was not getting further away.
