BBC News - Alien life in Universe: Scientists say finding it is 'only a matter of time'
www.bbc.co.uk...

One says it would be "surprising" if it is not discovered on Europa.

That would be my best guess.

That is a pretty safe comment for a scientist to make, I mean roughly 1 trillion years from now, the last star will be born. In about 100 trillion years, the last light will go out, so that makes some time to make that happen

Well, I’m glad these “experts” are at minimum capable of stating the obvious.

But, from my source:

"Many are optimistic of detecting life signs on a faraway world within our lifetimes - possibly in the next few years."

Right!

Nobody is excited when they're told water was found on Mars.

Nobody will be excited when told that Moss grows on Europa.

What we're looking for and hoping for, is Non-Earth life we can converse with.

What makes you think they might want to converse with us?

I hate this obfuscating dance. They already know, well some do, and have known for years. Ohh and I’m not talking aliens.

In all seriousness though... Perhaps. Life can be defined in a few ways.
Intelligent life on Europa? Probably not.
At this point, for me at least, microbial life is not that big a deal. No matter where it is found.
I understand that it has a magnitude of "other" meaningful impacts. That is fine of course.

Intelligent life on Earth?

As viewed from an advanced Alien civilization's perspective?

Probably not.

We are probably marked on a few star charts as "Best avoided".

When we do, I think we'll find ourselves.

moss &/or microbes are living stuff..... but ask that learned scientist about discovering a planet of T-Rex dinosaur life ->

there's likely pond moss environments galore... but nary a population of Ptery-Dactiles out there (cant ask peewee)

Absolutely!
We've all heard a few of the astronauts who saw strange flying objects during their missions.

"All These Worlds Are Yours Except Europa,
Attempt No Landing There.
Use Them Together, Use Them In Peace."

Arthur C Clarke/HAL-9000/?

And it's more than "only" a matter of time. It takes "Space" too. No good looking for butterflies in a volcano.

"Many are optimistic of detecting life signs on a faraway world within our lifetimes - possibly in the next few years."

The key word is optimistic.
And, just who are the many ?

ETA : Astronomers are not astrologists nor even biologists.

The "thing" with intelligence is that it's a human construct. Created, designed and gauged.
By human definition, atom bombs, fossil fuel consumption and war is par for the course.
Just another day "at the office" for the majority.

Humanity is as dumb as a bag of hammers and thick like two short planks.

Let it burn...

You know we are decended from a colony ship full of advertising executives, used car salespeople, hair dressers, telephone sanitizers, etc... The real people that were part of this great computer's operating system are long gone. We are mearly wet malware.

When are the Vogons going to arrive?

Plenty of NASA video feeds have been saved by collectors that show craft coming and going from Earth, like we're a supplier of something.

I said "can" converse with. According to a former Director of National Intelligence, they don't want to communicate...even on a basic level.
