AI Art can’t tell Ethnicity well

I tried one of those AI filters that does your portrait.

I had to laugh because it kept wanting to portray me as a different ethnicity.
More specifically a dark complexion person with African hair.

There’s nothing wrong with African hair, or dark skin but that is totally not my ethnicity or how I actually look.

I am Wasian. More specifically Korean, and American, more specifically Irish, German, French.
I have extremely fair skin, seriously I could pass as a vampire, I can’t even tan if I wanted to I just burn burn burn. I inherited 100% Irish complexion, but dark curly BUT soft hair, not textured. I know It’s a really rare mix, I got the curls from my Korean side not my European side too. My grandmother had the same curls and curl pattern. This combination must really confuse AI because
It automatically darkens my complexion and gives me African hair.

AI doesn’t understand dark curls on an Asian looking face. I am not surprised. I have one of those looks where people know “I’m mixed with somethin’” but just can’t tell what. Only one time in my entire life did someone guess right.
I went to an ear doctor, and the creepy old guy whispered in my ear, “I know you are Korean American and I think that mix makes the most beautiful people in the world” I heard him just fine and never went back to an ear Dr since.

I think it’s quite fascinating, but also shows how these things are flawed and shouldn’t be trusted if used in any sort of official manner.
What comes to mind, is like a police search for someone, or something of that nature!

Ai art in itself it getting quite controversial as it’s taking from real artist and regurgitating it…

The AI making the 'art' is only as good as it's programming. The saying still applies, "Garbage in, garbage out".

Considering that the input was a picture of herself, this comment could be read as very rude...

Maybe there is something more here, something sinister.
Maybe it wants to edit how we really look and add some things...
Make us all look more similar or something.

I can 100% guarantee you if anyone described the photo above and was looking for that person, they would never
assume it was me they were looking for.

more than likely if you go back far enough just would find just like everybody else your a heinz 57.

i personally have Irish, Italian, Swedish, Native American, German. then if you take into account how many countries / empires have been conquered by others, or have migrated into another region intermarried and changed the gene pool. not many people can claim to be of just one race, or ethnicity.

Of course we are all mixed, I have no argument about that.
What I'm saying is that I am Asian/White with naturally curly hair, that my friend is rare.
So rare i've never met anyone other person like me other than my grandma that possessed that trait.
Most Asians have very straight dark hair, some maybe a little wavy. VERY few have curls yet have fair skin.
What you do sometimes see is An Asain - Black mix that will have that kind of hair. That is why I'm guessing AI put me in that category.

www.gbhealthwatch.com...

The genes for thick straight hair in Asians
Most people of East Asian descent have thick, straight hair. This corresponds with a SNP (rs3827760) in the EDAR gene which is involved in hair follicle development. The ancestral allele of this SNP is the A-allele. The G-allele is the newly derived allele that leads to the thick, straight hair. In certain parts of Asia, almost all people have the G-allele (see Fig.1B). People with the GG genotype at this SNP have thicker hair compared to those with the AA genotype due to the modification of a single amino acid in the protein. Those with the AG genotype have hair slightly thinner than those with GG, but still thick when compared to Europeans and Africans (likely AA) [2, 3].

It's only as good as it's programming. Considering WHO does the programming, it's got a long way to go.

I was referring to the programming, not the data.

If it was taken that way, then I apologize.

So I played around with it a bit, and it 100% equated my curly hair to darker skinned ethnicities.
I put my hair up and then it let me look Asian again! Funny that.

What did you use to do this?
I think the picture came out beautiful and exotic...not knowing what you really look like.
I want to try it. lol

There is an AI filter on Tik Tok.

I look exactly like my avatar, I mean exactly. It literally looks like whoever made graphic used a photo of me for it.
The hair, widows peak, the nose, everything.
The AI images have elements of me in them, but they don't look like me, they look like possible cousins.
