Things like domains expiring doesn't even begin to explain the discrepancy between the reported number of results and the actual number of pages available, and you know it. I suspect Google will soon also hide the true number of results, so that it matches the number of pages available. It actually tells you the number of results available once you get to the last page. I suspect they decided not to show it on the first pages because then people would really notice something had changed.

That's exactly what we have to surmise. Well said!

I'll try Australia.

Google, 15 pages, no more.

Bing: 9th page is 4 results, 10th page is 3 results, 11th and onwards is 3 results, same results as page 10. Same as from America

Swisscow: still sketchy from page 45 onwards. Same as from America VPN.

Google via America VPN:
Page 5 of about 138 results (0.67 seconds)

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 138 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.

Page 15 of about 425 results (1.34 seconds)

Nothing at the end to allow you to continue.

Google Australia - Same.

Startpage Via America VPN stops at page 10.

Startpage nop VPN Australia stops at page 9.

Swisscows Via America VPN reaches page 45, 46, and its the same results over and over again.
SwissCows via Australia no VPN wonky at page 47 and its the same results over and over again.

DuckDuckGo via VPN America - Stops page 6, its three webpages repeating.

DuckduckGo via Australia no vpn - Stops page 5.

Bing America VPN - Page 15 - same webpages.

Bing Australia - Page 10 - same webpages.

I would upload images, but it seems the upload function on ATS is currently down. Just like last night.

Mate I know how it works. Just letting domains lapse doesn't do this. If there's a billion freaking results, but I only allow you to see three results, then the only answers you can get are in those three results.

I grew up before we had access to the internet. I started on computers using a x286 processor with 1 or 2 megabytes of ram, dialing in to a BBS, editing the autoexec.bat file just to free up some RAM so i could play some games I wanted to play.

If there are a billion results, but we are only allowed to see 200 of them...

And let me tell you, it's NOT 200 results, as is pointed out.

You are seeing lots of the same results time and time again, pushing you to see what they want you to see.

They are actively censoring the internet for a reason. But you can be assured that those who are doing the censoring must have a release function on their search engines. The internet might be no longer fit for purpose for the general public.

This change is fairly recent, because many of us remember a time when you could go hundreds or thousands of pages deep into search results.

It isn't, I have noticed that some 10 years ago.

Also, I don't see why every other search engine would start functioning the same way at around the same time, they all use their own proprietary algorithms, unless there is really one powerful entity providing them all with the same software.

Not all search engines are made by the companies presenting them, Yahoo uses Bing, for example.
Others probably use the same type of trick Google uses, like, for example, using an OR operator to give the number of results and doing the real search to show the search results.

The part I find most strange about all of this is that they aren't just targeting controversial search terms, this seems to affect any search term, which severely limits a search engines ability to provide a realistic map of the internet.

That's probably because it's driven by cost and not by any political agenda.

Or because most people rate search engines by the number of results instead of the quality of the results.

That's how Google surpassed (in user base) other search engines like Altavista (way better than Google).

If.
We do not know if the number of results presented is real, the number of pages returned is real or neither is real.
That's something only the search engine makers can know.

Personally, I think it's the number of results that is exaggerated, and always has been (or at least for the last 15 years or so).

funnily enough, this info comes from someone who can cure depression in 4 days. why didn't he win a medical nobel prize for that?

"BRIGHT SIDE has been accused of content farming for their focusing on quantity of videos over the quality of the information in them. The videos often use tricks such as drawn-out speaking, pauses in the video and unnecessary quips or comments to drag the videos out as long as possible. Alongside this, the channel sometimes presents misleading information in their list videos, as well as never presenting any sources at all."

youtube.fandom.com...

The youtube channel posted in the OP is "Bright Insight" NOT "Bright Side".

Consider the idea of decentralized search engines.

Conceptually, this should counteract monolithic information gate keepers, like Google, that manipulate search results beyond conventional SEO rules.

In reality, web crawling, tracing graphs of URL links and aggregating site metadata is not that difficult of a problem, and has been around for a long time, well before Google. Google's contribution was to scale up the search engine result sets and index them in a way that they are much faster to spool through.

If Google becomes too cumbersome and untrustworthy, then other options can spring up to replace it.

Really, the issues of net neutrality and large scale content filtering ("The Great Firewall") are more serious threats to the free spread of information than medelsome search engines, IMHO. It is much easier for users to switch to a new search engine than compensate for unfair/malicious routing rules that are set up lower in the network stack.

Soon all of you will run away to Yandex, Rutube and Vkontakte.

Because there is no Western censorship.

Are you implying that there is no censorship in Russia?

Some more tests (I'm on holiday, so I have the time).

The search expression was January 6th 2021, the browser was Opera, as it has an internal VPN that makes things easier.

This the results I got:

OK Here's the bottom line. WE ALL NEED TO STOP USING GOOGLE. Still have a gmail? Kill it. Do you say "Google it?" Stop saying that. Yahoo it, search it....remove "google it" from your lexicon and check anyone who says that. Change your Browser default search.

And use either Yahoo or Bing. Side note - Capitalism is our best hope. Pension funds fighting the ESG, and in search, here you have companies that are after cash, not ideology, providing the most honest results. I can trust the cash motive. Can't trust the ideological motive.

I did a search on each of the top engines for "January 6th 2021 was a setup"
Worst:
GOOGLE - 2 results AND it says "there aren't many great matches" at least the top result was appropriate.
DUCKDUCK - Surprising, though I heard they were co-opted. 1 Result, Americanthinker
BRAVE - Only got 3 results. Dissapointing. First relavant result was PBS. Conclusion: AVOID BRAVE
Qwant - 2 results, americanthinker and a random blogspot.com site
Swisscows had same result as Qwant

Best:
BING - 4.64 BILLION Top result: AmericanThinker article
YAHOO - 390 M results, top result: Americanthinker article, then blogspot article. Qwant and swisscows must draw from yahoo amoung others.
Dogpile - 5 pages + next, americanthinker top result
OneSearch - 5 Pages, American thinker top result; might be using same source as DogPile

COLLECTION:
All searches screencapped at postimg.cc...
