An enormous sinkhole linked to a copper mine in northern Chile which materialised this weekend has been captured in stunning new images.
Local mayor Cristobal Zuniga on Sunday confirmed the presence of the sinkhole, which is located right on the outskirts of the town, and spoke of the fear held by nearby residents that excessive mining in the area could have catastrophic consequences.
'We are concerned, since it is a fear that we have always had as a community, the fact we are surrounded by mining deposits and subterranean works under our community.'

The number of sinkholes worldwide has been steadily increasing, yet practices that cause them continue with little to no coverage for public awareness. Mankind is not being good stewards of planet earth. Is it really based on greed, or can nothing be done to un-ring the bell, so TPTB keep us all focused on one grandiose 'crisis' after another?

Sinkholes can be human-induced
New sinkholes have been correlated to land-use practices, especially from groundwater pumping and from construction and development practices. Sinkholes can also form when natural water-drainage patterns are changed and new water-diversion systems are developed. Some sinkholes form when the land surface is changed, such as when industrial and runoff-storage ponds are created. The substantial weight of the new material can trigger an underground collapse of supporting material, thus causing a sinkhole.

Here's a thread that explains the phenomenon:

While not completely satisfied or convinced, it makes sense and is worth taking note of for future reference.

Its amusing gov public officials blame the sinkholes on mining operations or fracking.

I have to agree. I've never ever seen a sinkhole with that degree of perfection to its shape.

Something is very, very off here.

Im wondering where all the material went. Mining in the area is a possibility, but doubtful anything they cut could hold that much dirt. More likely a natural cave collapsed, filling in with the dirt.

Going to be interesting, if, the results are made public.
