As a mother, I really want to know who the heck are raising these little pissants to think it is ok to to say things like this!? And this even comes from grown ass men!
So for one moment, I want the males who are bantering about this not being “real” let me ask you this, do you have girlfriends and girl friends, nieces, cousins, sister, wives, and mothers who play online? And if so, how would you feel if some online rando saying things like that to them?
Yes I know and understand this didn’t happen in real life, but think about how damaging it would be to hear that daily. Think what it can do to younger girls being told that. Because we all know lots of kids that do not have parents who know what and where there kids are doing online.

It really is a big thing, if you are a girl or a woman.
My boys played With my husband’s clan since the first COD game. They grew up with all the dads playing and learned how not to be @ss bites online. And the other dads boys did too. As parents, we loved the safe space.
Now my daughter learned to play with them, and play with her brothers and on her own. She is now 22, and plays Apex and totally rocks. But, and there always is a but… the crap she runs across, it’s kind of frightening. The things people say to her, some examples are
“ I hope you get raped”
“you must me a dike”
and
“shouldn’t you be blowing someone right now”.
Now this is a girl full of my sass and can trash talk with the best of them… but does that make it acceptable to be told that they hope she gets raped!? No it does not! And if girls and women are treated this way on a gaming platform, it sadly does not surprise me of meta rape.

I play online with and against girls myself but i guess its ok when they shout at me "I hope you/your mother dies" and things like that.
You mention that your daughter trash talks herself and can do it well, Do you asume she means eveything she says or do you just asume that only the other people mean every word that they say in that situation and only your daughter does not when she trashtalks.

I think this is the better topic of conversation. I think the issue with articles such as the one linked in the OP is that it exaggerates to the point where I can see how people would not take it seriously. It sensationalizes what happened to the point where it actually starts to dilute what the word “rape” conventionally means.
I may be wrong but I get the sense that the author of the article has such a desire to be part of the victim class that she is grasping at straws by presenting the situation the way she did.
Our 10 year old son is not a perfect angel but the chances of him behaving like that are somewhere between slim and none. I find it fascinating (and disturbing) to see how other kids his age behave and out of curiosity would love to be a fly on the wall in their homes.

Omg that is a horrible thing to say to someone. I’m sorry someone said that to you.
I guess I should have clarified trash talk. There is back and forth ribbing, the type you do with friends and siblings, not the WTF!? trash talk. IMO no one should say things like that, even if they don’t mean it.
