It's definitely a side point of the OP, but it's mostly why is the Pentagon seems to be pushing narratives without confirmation, whereas years ago such rumors would have warranted a "no comment" "unconfirmed" and "next question".

What is next? will the Pentagon speculate that Putin is gonna conjure demons from the pits of Hell, to smite down the Eastern Ukrainians. In other words, BS from our President and the media's talking heads is a given but used to you got no-nonsense from the Pentagon, especially during wartime and times of crisis.
