Any LD's Explain This To Me...

So, to all my Light Designers and stagehands, I have a question for you.

A few days ago, I was working the in for a national musical tour. I was working electrics and was sent into the house for focus...a post in itself in the rant section later.

There were 3 instruments that I focused that got me wondering....why would you use:

A Source 4 with a 10° barrel.....and an Iris (spelling?) Kit?

Is it bc the throw of the 10° barrel gives a softer wash?

I don't know but I sure do admire the skills of all the gaffers, grips, and riggers in the biz, be it in house or location.

The only time I would expect that is maybe with a gobo. I will say I have seen a lot of stuff on gigs that made me scratch my head and laugh. Maybe they had some show with a dude at a piano and used the iris to get a tighter focus on him and stay off the piano...then because its common...no one messed with it again and it just sat there collecting dust.
