the Lynx CSV has been produced to meet four of the 10 roles involved in Rheinmetall's bid for Project Land 400 Phase 3.

While the primary objective of the AUD10–15 billion (USD6.8-13.6 billion) programme is to deliver and support up to 450 IFVs for the Australian Defence Force (ADF), it also seeks around 100 combat support platforms in manoeuvre support, logistics, repair, and recovery roles.

The Lynx Combat Support Vehicle is a curious development in Australia's niche Army vehicle and wider defence industry. But there is a need to cut through the marketing jargoning from Rheinmetall, the vehicle's manufacturer. One might argue that the unveiled design isn't wholly original, but few concepts potentially meet that criteria. For instance: The V-shaped hull employed by the Bushmaster and other IED/landmine resistance vehicles is of South African origin. Also, coming from a joint family of vehicles should offer the advantage of commonality in spare parts and maintenance.

No doubt, extensive prototype testing lies ahead and is easily overlooked. Compared to weapons systems, a vehicle's reliability and mileage before servicing is required aren't "sexy", but they make or break any platform's success.

In all likelihood, potential export orders depended upon the vehicle enter service with the Australian Army. International customers tend to prefer proven and mature platforms. So if Poland acquires Hawkei, those vehicles will have to spend years in service with the Australians, but that is a topic for another discussion.
