Just so you know... An S21 replacement screen in the Plus version runs about $200-$210us plus tax&shipping, if you happen to break it. Samsung has very high replacement screen prices. I have an S8 and an S6 which I have been holding off repairing until the prices come down. I imagine an S22 will be between $300 and $400 for a replacement screen. Then there is the labour on top as well, unless you can fix them yourself.

The least expensive fairly new phone is surprisingly and Apple 8Plus, which comes in around $18us plus taxes/shipping/labour. BTW, I hate Apple but they are cheap.

Cheers - Dave

I am looking to upgrade mine as well. I have a Galaxy J3, and I think I want the S21+ in violet. We'll go AT&T because that's husband's work carrier.

I make use of the insurance. I had a Galaxy note 5 that stopped charging, so I took it in a week after they released the note 9. They gave me a brand new note 8. It does everything I need. Its already snoopy enough. I dont need to upgrade the snoop. Yesterday it apologized, and said it thought I was talking to it, and it missed what I said. I told it NOYB

I think husband has the Note 8. Mine was a package deal with his. We don't have snoop problems with his. If anything, it seems to be half deaf when he tries to use the voice function.

Its probably just playing possum. It hears everything. You can be sure of that

Eh...

Depends on your situation.

If you have unlimited and a fairly recent phone you can get 800 off right now... Even if it's damaged. So you can buy a busted eligible phone online for cheap to get the promo.

Have to ask yourself if you think you'll get that much off later or if it even matters.

Good choice on the ultra tho. Great phones.

I've owned several different Android phones. I've dropped them all numerous times. I've even accidentally thrown them onto the floor once or twice. I've never so much as scratched a screen. The S21 Ultra has Gorilla Glass Victus too, which is even more damage resistant.
I'd also rather have no phone at all than use anything Apple makes, so Apple is out of the question.

What do you to your phones?! My poor old J3 has been dropped numerous times, even on pavement, and it doesn't have a scratch.

But an Otterbox case fixes most clutz cases real well.

Reason for getting a new phone? Mostly because the contract is up so time for a free (or practically free) upgrade.

I'm Samsung s21 ultra (5g) now and have to say I love the phone. Great phone for streaming high definition movies and games when bored at work. Just a bit rubbish when "they" activate the 5g and your 'rona jab kicks in

My favorite thing about the ultras is the high refresh rate. Less stressful on my eyes if I'm scrolling through text. It's not as jumpy.

I had a cellphone store as well, one of my business (I had 3 companies, R&D, entertainment and cell repair), so I am quite familiar with what can and can't be done to cell phones lol. I actually had a porn guy show up with a iphone 6+ a few years back. He had footage on the phone, which he wanted badly from some movie he had just done and the phone had been run over by a truck. So I got out the stereoscope, removed the memory chip and put it into another phone ;-) People break phones/tablets more often than you can imagine, at one point we were doing $40k+ a month in repair sales, that's 15-18 day, every day.

What was fun was when a government "agency" comes in and want untraceable phones for their undercover people. I generally asked them to provide an S7 or S8 with at least 64gb, so I can mount Ubuntu and then run a VM for the Android OS. That way I can alter the IMEI, mac addresses, WiFi info and IP addresses on the fly while using a pay-as-you-go SIM. It's better doing it this way as well, because then you can also run Debian Kali or Tails out of an OTG (as the boot process is visible - Grub) through the phone to operate additional exploits or TOR based security and E2E encryption.

I'm retired now though, I only do that kind of work for personal friends going off the grid and generally for free or I get them an untraceable sat-phone. Just depends on what they really need and the end goal. (waves at CSIS, hi Jim ;-)

Cheers - Dave

Ive got the note 10 plus.
Getting ready to upgrade.
Buying the latest unlocked note version and dropping my Verizon sim in it.
I like my phones running only tha apps I want.
The carrier models are ridiculous.
...Filled with massive spyware and crap you don't need that sucks your phone dry.
After using the note, I won't go back.
The stylus is awesome..it's also a remote for the camera.
I draw a lot of construction stuff and you can scribble faster than typing for quick checklists.
It's also great if you have manly sausage fingers.
All your txt doesn't come out like:
Hdr FCC xdfddh uvgC srgjfx
I highly recommend buying outside of a carrier.
Locked bootloaders are bs.

I spent 3k USD on two Galaxy S20 Ultras last year, and they cut the piece in half a month after I got it. they get the right away though and the line of phones is great, just wait a few weeks for the price to drop.

Yep. That's why my husband, a self-described "fat fingers", likes his notes. They have the stylus and the ability for him to chicken scratch his own notes.

Nobody's mentioned how 'phones track your every move and are constantly gathering data.

Seems some kind of spying on us is alright.

You can disable some of the tracking, but you have to actively go in and do it.

I did.
This is why you need to buy your phone outside of the carriers.
Look up your model on Amazon. Add "unlocked" to any model you want.
When you get one with an unlocked boot loader, you can disable any APKs (apps) that are on it.
You can go way beyond renaming apks to disable and run your own custom roms. Even an open source linux os.
You can even use a google "emulator" I think it's called, where you can get all the functionality of playstore, gmail and maps in a functional "sandboxied" app, keeping the google tracking aids off your phone.
It's all pretty simple to learn.
The safest route is prepaid sim cards with cash thrown into an unlocked phone.
Just watch the super hiv tracking cookies all the tech sector like F-book use.
They just need to get the meid# once tied to your name in some obscure account login.
I think that's the safest setup for full security.
I've been out of the phone loop for a while though, I used to love mesding with them.
I just want mine spyware and bloatware free, don't care about anyone reading my communications.
I'm pretty boring these days.

In my opinion, when the Samsung S22 phone is released, the price of the S21 series may decrease to stimulate people to buy the new series. Therefore, if you want to save money, try to wait a few more months.
