Loud calls on social media urge Beijing to strike while world is busy with coronavirus crisis, but observers say the authorities do not want to be rushed
A recent article in an influential Communist Party journal drew on parallels with the 17th century conquest of the island to highlight need for patience
Recently a number of commentators and retired military commanders have called for Beijing to retake control of the island, where the defeated Nationalist forces fled in 1949 following their defeat in the civil war.
Some former military leaders have argued that the United States – which is bound by law to help the Taiwanese government defend itself – is presently unable to do so because all four of its aircraft carriers in the Pacific have been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Another huge problem for world peace China taking Tawain against its will.
China is really feeling its cheerios lately. Now they want to take Mt Everest away from the poor country of Nepal whose only income practically comes from mountain climbing. As well, they're having a little border skirmish with India.

The Tawain thing would be a disaster but unfortunately, it's inevitable, and what will the world do?...nothing, the CCP will take it.
China won't do anything now since it would be too controversial in a time China is already under a suspicious microscope due to COVID 19.
China has territorial claims with seemingly every nation it shares a border with. And that’s not including all the nations bordering the South China Sea and East China Sea. China and Russia are the only nations in the world still eager to acquire new territory, and subjects who don’t wish to be their subjects.

I refuse to believe that China is overwhelmed by 'Nationalist Fever' over Taiwan.

170CHINA’S RISEWhy Does China Care about Taiwan? To most Chinese, Taiwan represents something far more important thanmere territory. It is the final piece in China’s attempts to overcome thelegacy of its “century of humiliation” spanning the 19th and early 20thcenturies, when it was colonized and divided by outside powers. Japanhad colonized Taiwan in 1895 as a spoil of the Sino-Japanese War and re-linquished control only after its defeat in World War II. The return of Taiwan is also wrapped up in China’s traditional measureof national power and self-respect dating back to its imperial days: its“unity.” Affirmed through consistent official—government, media, andeducational—propaganda for decades, Taiwan’s status as a part of historicChina, and as a lingering symbol of China’s historic victimhood, is an un-questionable article of faith and self-evident truth that resonates deeplywith an overwhelming number of Chinese citizens, even among those theoutside world might consider the most reformist or progressive on issueslike human rights and democracy. For Chinese citizens to think otherwise,or even to raise questions about prevailing opinion toward Taiwan’s sta-tus (and even official Chinese policy), threatens to call into question theirlove of the “motherland” and thus their patriotism. Few assume this pos-ture in today’s China. This was not always so. Before the Ming dynasty (1368–1644 AD), theisland had little association with mainland China. The Portuguese and theDutch colonized Taiwan during the 16th and 17th centuries, respectively, and only under the Qing (1644–1911 AD) was the island retained forcefullyas a protectorate.2During Qing rule, native uprisings were common, andcentral control inconsistent and tenuous. Taiwan thus has had a murkystatus historically and a legacy of local resistance to Chinese rule. While both the Chinese communists under Mao Zedong and the Na-tionalists (Kuomintang) under Chiang Kai-shek eventually came to assertthat Taiwan is part of China, neither side mentioned or focused on theissue until World War II when Taiwan became a potential spoil of warupon the defeat of Japan, which had colonized the island in 1895, and thewaning days of the Chinese civil war in the late 1940s.3After Chiang’s Na-tionalists were defeated in the Chinese civil war and fled to the island in1949, they continued to assert their “Republic of China” regime remainedthe rightful government of all of China, just from offshore in the tempo-rary capital of Taipei. The communists for their part viewed Taiwan as thefinal stage of the civil war and came to consider restoration of the coun-try’s unity—also to include Hong Kong and Macao—as essential for theregime’s legitimacy.
