Corona - Covid19 - General Discussion

Geeze I had to scroll for ever to find the general discussion thread. There are tons of new threads that should all be condensed and put in here. Oh well, its not my job I guess.


Life in East Tennessee is pretty much the same as it was 2 months ago. People arent panicking but they are stocking up on TP and canned raviolis. Chef Boyardee is making a killing off their nasty canned noodles. Anywho back in February I stocked up my elderly fathers fridge and all of his cupboards with about 3 months worth of grocery's. All of the things that an 80 yr old guys likes to eat. I cook about 95% of his meals and take them to him since the man can burn toast lol This morning I went over to make him some lunch and checked his freezer. IM ABSOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED!! He defrosted everything and had been feeding his food to the cats these past 2 weeks he said. When I cook I freeze meals for him so all he or I have to do is defrost and reheat if I am busy... its all gone. He said he was worried that the cats that he feeds were going to go hungry. Mind you these are feral cats. I have 40 pounds of cat food for them at my house. He has a 16 pound bag sitting in his kitchen, unopened since the cats have been eating lasagna and various casseroles and slabs of ham.
Im so angry right now but I couldn't get mad at him .. he has dementia and its my own fault for not checking his freezer. : ( But it blindsided me and now I have to restock his fridge and freezer. I guess Ill only put things in his freezer that cats dont like to eat.. maybe vegetables. fml. So now I get to go back out and do some more shopping and do some more rearranging. So everyone that has elderly parents please do a double check and make sure they arent feeding random animals all of their food.

So....is it too soon to teach the children how to maintain the infrastructure after we're gone?
I was thinking maybe some online tutorials on how to operate power plants and water treatment plants for the children to watch while the schools are closed.
Oh, and they'll need to learn farming and construction as well.

How is your town reacting now?

3 confirmed cases in Alaska now and I am pretty sure many more to come.
My uncle passed away yesterday in Seattle. He had to be flown down there from here about a month ago due to heart problems. He tested positive for COVID-19. My cousin and his wife are now in self quarantine and got tested on their way home as they were with him when he passed. They said 3 days for results. They live in Washington too.

So many people go right through Seattle and stay in the hospitals there, then come back up after treatments so it is only a matter of time.

Our city counsel passed emergency measures yesterday to do everything by phone now. Hospital and elderly center is basically on lock down. The store I work in is setting limits on certain products. All kinds of changes taking place, so what's happening now where you are?

I drove down to Galveston today to deliver some things to a friend who has been having trouble finding them down there, and then down seawall on the way back.

Galveston's mayor announced last night that effective today bars an restaurants would not be able to offer eat in services and must only do drive through, carryout or delivery. Well, bars are screwed, but restaurants can at least still offer limited service.

I noticed that even though it is spring break, there were quite a few less tourists out than usual, but it was certainly not desolate by any means. All of the bike rental places and tourist trap shops were still open, as were grocery stores/Walmart. Not sure how much of an effect the eat in service ban will have considering there is still a large amount of public mingling taking place in the above-mentioned places.

Let this one sink in a bit



Have one very unhappy granddaughter she has to drive back
to her collage and empty all her material and residence
Trip is close to 1,000 mile one way 9 to 10 hours drive

Fear can be a bad thing. My local area is not on any mandatory lock down and the county went from zero to one or two detected cases yesterday. I ordered a pizza and ate it last night and worked on my house. I noticed I was getting hot and sweating. I was still hot last night and turned my air down to 67. I started wondering if I have a fever. I found my digital thermometer. The battery is dead. This morning I noticed I feel cooler and am no longer hot but my house is 66 or so. Typical for me all winter. Actually I used to have it at 64. I have no symptoms unless I have a fever. I will find my miniature screwdriver set and take apart the battery compartment for my thermometer and find out what battery it needs.

I'm sitting on my sofa with a blanket now thinking I was wondering if I caught the virus from picking up a pizza from the pizza place with only 2 known cases in the whole county. I'm hot blooded which means I get hot easy on a normal day. I've worn shorts outside when temperatures were in the 50's and windy and someone called me last of the Vikings. Now I'm getting worried when I'm hot after working and eating almost a whole pizza. I was thinking maybe I should have stayed home.

I heard they are working on a test to be able to find out if you already had the virus and have antibodies to it. I don't get colds very often but had one several weeks ago and everyone around me caught something everywhere I went after our leader said we had little to worry about and it was low risk but it was after people were flying from China to the US. I've been so busy I never once thought about checking my temperature until last night when I felt hot or very warm. My cold could have been the virus and me being hot was just normal for me. I won't ever know unless someone wants to test me for whatever reason. I thought about giving blood assuming that is safe. However I will wait until I finish moving heavy stuff.

Bars and restaurants are closed for dine in service and have been for a few days. Take out only in both South Carolina and North Carolina.

I was expecting a long line for the drive through with it being Saturday evening and the pizza place usually has a long line. I drove right up. I hope things get back to normal before too long.

I wish the media would tell teenagers and college aged people if they aren't worried about the virus, they should be worried if the hospital workers are overwhelmed and they need to call 911 for any reason when all emergency personnel are too busy and all the hospitals are full of dying people, if they get injured and call 911, they may have to wait a long time for help unless they are at risk of dying real soon. Hopefully 911 keeps working as is and help arrives quickly. However I wouldn't want to call 911 and be taken to a hospital full of sick people everywhere.

It's possible they don't think anything bad will happen to them, period--viral or nonviral.

Calling 911? Only if I know I'll die without it because there's a very good chance the hospital will kill me, based on several personal hospitalizations and the stats on nosocomials and medical errors even when there isn't a crisis. Now? I expect both of those to increase right along with viral cases and number of admissions.

I was chatting about this the other day, I'm teaching my boy soil structures, the relationship between micro organisms with soils and plants, optimal growing conditions for particular species etc, teaching him mindfulness.

Now I no longer have to compete with the state for his attention I can teach him all sorts of useful knowledge...

A family decision was made last night and a solution was reached. We are getting a pool. Nothing fancy just an above ground 17' by 48 ". With the thought of being stuck at the house and not leaving for days or weeks on end this will help with staying sane and cool during our hot and humid months. Im going with the mentality that if we don't go out we wont get sick and soaking in chlorine sounds pretty healthy to me right about now.
