This Doomsday Clock has a more dragged out last minute than an NFL game. I'm not sure what it's trying to promote. Recycling? Because that's roughly the extent of my ability to do anything about it. Otherwise, I'll worry about it when it all goes to hell in a handbasket (if I live that long).

How's that handbasket holding up?

Timing is always the hardest thing to predict, judging a call based on the perceived timing isn't always going to produce best results. Sometimes aspects can't be foreseeable with definitive accuracy. That's why most tacticians will wait.

Doomsday clock is ticking down quite well now, isn't it.

Sorry, kids, but you ain't nothing on what it was like during the Cuban crisis.

Back then people would consider today's situation welcome upgrade.

Not to sound pessimistic but as well as prolonged nuclear winters it's also speculated that radiation sickness, deformed births and starvation/cannibalism would be prevalent.

Anyone who hasn't seen this 1984 BBC docu-drama should really watch it - it's better than most horror films.

Threads (1984) [REALISTIC look at nuclear war

Looks like more and more folks are picking up on the true horror of that docudrama.

Not so sure, current clack has it, that today's situation is much hotter.

There's a lot more Nations involved now, than just Russian missiles secretly staged in Cuba.

Seriously though, all the hyperbolic military threats coming from everyone, is unsettling.

When was the last time democrats said they would nuke the NorKs?

Never, not even during the Korean war. So yeah there's that.

China's economy is in dire straits they will need a war, one that they can whip up some national fever to get people to ignore the economy, que up Taiwan.

Depending on where you look (numbers vary) the bottom line is Taiwan does the lions share of semi-conductor manufacturing.

So the west with all those technological gadgets, and linking everything through a computer are going to have to defend taiwan and till the war is over no more semi-conductors, industries will shut down, wars will rage, modern farm machinery requires computer chips hope the farmers dont have equipment breakdown.

We have never seen anything like what is coming and if we are lucky half of humanity will survive.

The way back archive is, perhaps the best online resource I've ever come across. Glad to see it's timeless utility still.

It's not a matter of if terrorists go Nuclear, it's a matter of when. Proliferation is higher than ever, no agreement to disarm has been beneficial. It's all a deception as always.

The biggest issue in this Cold War 2.0 isn't MAD (mutually assured destruction). It's the fact that the three biggest nuclear powers believe that we can have achievable victories in limited nuclear exchanges and Reagan and Kruschev never had to deal with cyber warfare or other 4th and 5th Gen Warfare.

It should be one minute to midnight---no 59 seconds.

Threads was amazing, scared the hell outta me when it came out.
I much preferred it to The day After, mostly because as a Brit it was more relatable and boy was it grim.

I give up on the whole doomsday clock thing, these days it seems they are more likely to move it forward to let the world know what a terrible person they think Trump is rather than for any realistic reason.

I feel far safer than I did in the 80s thats for sure and there is no way in hell today can be even remotely as risky as the early 60s

I think the immediate nuclear threat is from terrorists, maybe dirty bombs?

Zelensky just speaking about intelligence that Russia is planning attacks on nuclear power plants to cut them off from the grid with winter coming, with the potential for several more Chernobyls.

Then there is the MAD thing but God knows what Putin's advisors are telling him about a possible first strike......

Pretty sure Dirty bombs were dismissed as a remotely viable weapon years ago.

Chernobyl type things yes that would be bad, hardly doomsday though and as for MAD you'd have to have spent the last 70 years with your head in a bucket to think Mad still wasnt a thing. At least when you are talking about an exchange between the big two. (Though that Satan 2 missile looks a bit of a burp lately)

Sure, not doomsday, but not good.

I had in mind the sort of duff advice Putin probably had about taking Kyiv in short order.

I'd imagine the blokes responsible for that, if they aren't already dead are enjoying life in the gulags or with a penal battalion.

Most likely, but whomever are probably still telling him what he wants to hear. He does have a thing about his "unstoppable" wonder weapons.

Reminds me when Murray Walker was commentating on that F1 race when Mansell ran out of fuel just before the finish line:

"AND NOTHING CAN STOP HIM NOW"!

"He's stopped, Murray".
