Chinese spy ship staying just outside Australia's territorial waters ahead of Talisman Sabre war games

I’m shocked but not surprised at the recent comments by our Defence Department referring questions about movements of Chinese vessels to Beijing.

A Chinese spy ship that has been closely tracked by the Australian Defence Force has now arrived off the coast of Queensland to monitor joint military exercises.
Key points:
• Defence sources say the Chinese spy ship is staying just outside Australia's territorial waters in the Coral Sea
• International interest is expected in Exercise Talisman Sabre war games involving Australian, US and Japanese militaries
• Spy ship is equipped with advanced communications systems for eavesdropping

Late last week the Chinese surveillance vessel began making its way south towards Australia ahead of the start of Exercise Talisman Sabre involving Australian, US and Japanese militaries.

Sources have told the ABC the spy ship has now reached Australia's "exclusive economic zone" in the Coral Sea, but is staying outside territorial waters

What is also more concerning is that in the light of the recent raids by the Feds against the ABC’s Offices and the seizure of materials relating to the “Afghan Files” war crimes by the ADF Special Forces.

In effect we now see that what the above could lead to is any journalist who decides to contact Beijing about Chinas military movements could fall under that umbrella.

Mr. Barns said that meant it could be more difficult for journalists to claim public interest protections. And the public interest test does not apply to the public servant whistleblowers.
"New laws passed last year allow for a limited public interest defence which is provided to journalists and their publishers but it does not enable the source of the material to enjoy that protection," he said. ……

Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, the former Minister for International Development and the Pacific, says Australia has lost the psychological battle with China.
She says allowing the three warships to dock this week, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square, was an act of appeasement by Australia.

Nothing, to see here. US also spy on everyone else doing their own war games. From satellite, Spyplanes or by drone. We are not at total war with China. So everyone can spy on each other. Just like Russia doing fly by of Area51. If one side starts blocking it will be war obvious.

Well when you say nothing to see here you missed the point about journalists being fobbed off by Government spokespersons; one could say its implied in a open society that at least the "servants of the people" ie. Military or any other Government entity could at least make some effort in communication. or even to inform of concerns of the public.

The Chinese ship is in international waters and since Australia is not at war with China there is nothing that can be done to the vessel. It is, in fact, a non story and the referral to call Beijing is correct.
