Initial reports from US officials suggested that five Iranian vessels were involved in the incident.

that says it all

So the US says they were involved and the Iranian navy said there were no clashes

so who to believe ?

Thing is the US and UK are probably itching for a war for those patriot votes etc !

the UK is broken and war mongers love a good war to bring people together !

You gotta feel sorry for the young kids on both sides coaxed into 'make something of your life' like on those radio adverts the MOD put out. They even use a Scouse accent (never home counties lol) to reel the kids into handing over their futures to a life and death gamble.

The day Iran actually hijacks a British vessel (commercial or otherwise) will be the day sentient extraterrestrial life reveals its existence/presence to humans here on Earth.

No chance.

Yeah it's not like Iran has the balls to seize a ship belonging to a major military power.

Okay, fine, I stand corrected.

In any case, the UK is not combat ready anyway, so even if Iran committed such a daring act, they'd probably be talked down.

So far, it's "all talk" from our side (and the odd sanctions here and there). "War" is unnecessary, arduous and ill-advised at this current moment in time.

It's a good thing we're not starting a war with Iran then.

Are you saying that if Iran did limited military strikes on American soil like we propose to do would not be an act of war?

The worse part, it is the poor that usually fight these wars to make others richer.
You will have many killed, and many come back disabled or maimed that will reach out to the VA for help where there is substandard care. They will be told, sorry, we are broke and cannot afford increasing the VA budget.

Are you saying that shooting down an aircraft in international airspace, and attempting to seize a ship in international waters isn't an act of war? Why is it that Iran can do whatever they want, and it's fine, but if we even talk about retaliating for their actions it's an act of war?

It's an anti-terrorism operation.

Why are only *some* countries allowed to conduct anti-terrorism campaigns, but other countries aren't?

The Islamic Republic of Iran may be viewed as a "hostile" nation by several nations on the planet, but as a sovereign and independent nation, they too have their own "terrorists" and "terror groups" to deal with.

Not surprised at this story at all.

I get what you're saying, but what makes you think the US or the UK are at all "combat-ready" for a campaign in Iran?

So far it's just "we will escort commercial vessels and protect them if needed". No troop surge, no chomping at the bit. Just posturing and a war of words here and there.

Iran is a very different situation than we've seen in that region. If anything happens it will be limited in scope, similar to the first strikes in Syria, and other countries in the past. The planned strike would have hit the air defenses in the area that the S-200 was fired that brought down the BAMS-D. The idea is to reign in the IRGC, and teach them that it's a bad idea to keep escalating things the way they have been. Then deal with any escalations after in a limited manner, similar to Preying Mantis.

Precisely. Limited in scope.

The media complex puts out hyperbolic headlines to make the inattentive think some giant conflict will occur. Nonsense.

Neither the US or the UK (or any allies for that matter) are "combat-ready" for anything even resembling 2003 or 2004.

Don't expect any "shock and awe" in 2019 AD.

The worst we'll probably hear this year is something like this:

"Iranian vessel fires in UK naval vessel"

We have already seen TIRI shoot down a US drone. The US's response? Sanctions...on a dead dude.

Iran is being foolish again. Her Majesties ship, Montrose will slap them, and if that isn't enough, we have got Her Majesties back, and we will rain Hellfire on them.

The H.M.S Montrose is there? I'm from the town of Montrose and that ship comes to port regularly, they used to put together a football team and play against the town team whenever they are on shore, go get 'em lads...

Hopefully they tested everything prior to deployment, see if everything still works and all.

ETA: On one hand folks like to claim it's not a big deal if Iran gets nukes because they're too smart to use them, but then they'll turn around and respond to limited strikes and get themselves into a conventional war with US and possibly its allies? Are they smart or not?

That's a fair enough question. I suppose it's nuance. Just like people are willing to be critical of the federal government and its spending unless it has to do with foreign projection, and then question the reasoning is considered a no no.

Personally, I doubt they would risk nuclear annihilation by using one... But they're bats### crazy so who really knows.

My question has always been why is that region our responsibility.

Very doubtful that any actual nukes will be fired this century, bar an actual Islamist terror group or outfit getting its hands on some actual weapons...

I dont think its a matter if we are ready or not

but we will goto war if that's what is called for by our elected officials as it lines pockets and swells bank balances
and gets some votes !

we don't have to be ready , just so long as the enemy believes we are

British are holding their ships full of oil,and they said that they would retaliate,so it's ok for Brits to steal but not anyone else?,I'd be careful might get nuked

Oh calm down dear. Nobody is getting "nuked".

This isn't a freaking Hollywood flick.

The worst we'll probably see is some sort of standoff or temporary flare-up in the Strait of Hormuz. Some Iranian dinghy firing on a UK or US vessel or something and a little tit-for-tat here and there and a bit of dancing and prancing around with oil prices.

Yawn.

My understanding is that in international waters its anyones jurisdiction based on the nationalities of the people involved and the ships they are on (where they are registered to) !

US ship US crew , then the US can intervene and use their own laws to convict of any crime
same for any other nation ! UK ship , registered to UK then UK can intervene and try for crimes !

Oh yeah same here in the UK. They use accents on the radio from areas with high unemployment at the moment teh MOD using Liverpoodlian / Scouser accent to reel in the young lads. It's a mad worl really and it's the same in any workplace. The times one can look back and hear the boss say "It wunna hurt ya" and you knew it was dodgy lol! Just the same thing really
