I never knew that. You learn something new everyday.
So to use the word " Watermelon " toward a black person in America is both racist and derogatory.
The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has apologised after a teacher said her group of pupils suffered racist language and treatment during a visit. Marvelyne Lamy said staff had followed the black and other minority 12 and 13-year-olds, yelling at them not to touch exhibits while ignoring white groups. She said staff told the group: "No food, no drink, and no watermelon." The term dates back to the US civil war and is considered derogatory when used in relation to the black community

So bearing this in mind, a question. When you are in a restaurant in America, can a waiter ask if you would like your coffee black or white ?
When slavery was abolished at the end of the 1860s some black people grew and sold watermelon to provide for their families. The fruit went on to be used as an excuse to characterise an entire section of the population as being lazy and content with simple pleasures and, therefore, flaunting their independence. Minstrel shows, caricatures, songs and cartoons were used to used to dehumanise and denigrate the black community.
It is casual racism in the UK too, wasn't aware the US had ever heard of it. Boris Johnson got in trouble a few years back for remarking on 'watermelon smiles' while touring Africa
When I as a Canadian had imbibed a trifle enthusiastically, and confessed to being somewhat pissed, my American pal wondered what it was that I was angry about....but that's what we would call 'pissed-off''. English as a second language must be a real picnic.

Just don't come 'round the US and ask to 'bum a fag' and you'll be good
That's a deal.
As long as you don't come to The U.K. and tell a woman you don't know that you have " Plenty Of Spunk "

Being British this is probably the craziest thing about America to me.
A watermelon is a fruit. How can it be racist? Are watermelons nazi fruit? Do they gang up on the grape and try to exterminate them in the name of watermelon supremacy? help me out here.

Speaking of weird-assed racist food memes from a bygone era, Cracker is also racist term in America, but to me if you add cheese, salami, pickled onion and dip to it, it's a nice h'orderve. I also love chicken and watermelon too - but I'm a non-binary food-before-race sorta bloke so it's par for the course really.

Cauliflower is racist also.
Don't say that in New York.
It's apparently a "Colonial" vegetable.
" York " is Colonial also isn't it ?
