CPD has subpoenaed Smollett’s phone records, per a friend on the force.
If the police have indeed issued a warrant for Smollett's phone records it means they have probably cause and a judge agreed with them. Otherwise they'd still ha e to rely on Smallett's word.
I wonder what tips they got especially considering having a warrant issued, those tips would have to be credible to allow for the issuance of a warrant for the phone records.
Chicago Police told ABC News that Smollett finally gave detectives his “limited and redacted” phone records Monday afternoon.
The police later told ABC News reporters that the phone records provided to detectives do not meet the burden for a criminal investigation.
Chicago police spokesman says “Detectives may be following up with him (Smollett) to request additional data to corroborate the investigative timeline.”
Smollett's crisis manager, Chris Bastardi, told Fox News: “Jussie is the victim here, which has been stated by the Superintendent of Police. Jussie has voluntarily provided his phone records from within an hour of the attack and given multiple statements to police. Chicago PD has repeatedly informed us that they find Jussie's account of what happened that night consistent and credible. Superintendent Johnson has been clear from Day 1 that Jussie is a victim.
Smollett did not initially submit his phone records to investigators when asked but later submitted a redacted version that detectives have judged to be “insufficient.”
...
Bastardi told Fox News that any redacted information was "intended to protect the privacy of personal contacts or high-profile individuals not relevant to the attack.”
The New York Post’s “Page Six” column first reported Monday that phone records for Smollett and his manager, whom he told authorities he was speaking with during the attack, were turned over to Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson’s chief of staff. But hours after receiving the records — a heavily redacted document file of the actor’s calls and a screenshot of his manager’s phone calls — a spokesman for Johnson said detectives would likely need additional data from Smollett to crack the case.

The redacted parts of his phone records probably lead to Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. They are friends, and she is trying to get an "anti-lynching" bill through Congress.

Because? Until then, lynching is legal?

Oh, and someone might want to clue in Mr. Bastardi that Superintendent Johnson isn't the guy investigating this case. He's just the supervisor, so his assurances that Smollett is the victim really don't mean a heck of a lot.

Yeah, here is what theyt turned over as "evidence" and "phone records":

A document file he created with some phone records and a screenshot from his manager's phone, really?? Either these people are genuinely stupid to a high degree or hiding a conspiracy to perpetrate a hoax, a racial hate based politically biased hoax.
I think a judge needs to get involved now, and legal papers served to the Telco for the records.
In addition, a bottle was found with a bleach like substance by reporters in the are near the alleged attack
The bottle, which was found by New York Post reporters who retraced Smollett's path through Streeterville the night of the attack, was sent to a lab for analysis.

Investigators also failed to locate any evidence corroborating Smollett’s claims.

Chicago police confirmed a New York Post story about the hot sauce bottle.
"It's unclear if that is related to the incident as it was not discovered during any of the earlier canvasses but we took it for analysis," Chicago Police Department (CPD) spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. "The FBI is providing CPD with technical assistance on this case at our request. I'm not sure if the bottle went to their lab or one of ours."
