The Shiites have won the elections and a theocracy is in the works. The future for women in Iraq lacks freedom. Two years after America invaded Iraq, women are starting to change their lives in a way they don't want. Their lives are being changed in ways they don't like. With Saddam out and his Secular society destroyed, women are being forced to live under Islamic law. Women are being turned into second class citizens in a land where Saddam's government was known for its commitment to gender equality. While not all women are in fear of Sharia, it is odd that those who resent the occupation are also dependent on the U.S. to help them keep Islamic extremists at bay.

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Two years after the invasion of Iraq and just weeks before the country's first free election, "Amina" began wearing a headscarf for the first time in her life. Her father insisted upon it.

"I don't like this and I don't see the danger. No one ever bothered me before," Amina says, sitting in her office located in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Khadimiya, her long brown hair streaming down her back. At first the 27-year-old professor at the engineering college resisted, arguing that her students will lose respect for her for caving in to the fundamentalists. But her father would not be moved: Amina didn't have a choice; the extremists were far too dangerous to be defied.

Life wasn't always this dangerous for women like Amina. Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq was a secular country where women could freely walk the busy streets without a scarf or a male escort, and stay out late at outdoor cafes with their families, sometimes until two or three in the morning. While women suffered as much as any other Iraqi under Saddam's tyranny, Baathist laws were noteworthy for their commitment to gender equality. Unlike their peers in the Arab world, Iraqi women enjoyed equal employment and educational opportunities and equal pay.

While earlier this week it was reported that Iraqi women officials are vowing to implement Sharia there has also been new information coming out about the fears of women in Iraq. From the fear of violence from the American Occupiers, to the newest, most real and potentially everlasting violence that comes from the breaking of Sharia Islamic Law.

I think we all know about Sharia or at least should be aware of it's consequences for the psyche of women subjected under it. It is odd that we have had two different stories come out in the same week. The link below to another ATSNN news report talks about the women officials supporting the implementation of Sharia. While they call out that civil rights must go hand in hand with Sharia how can the over look the restrictions on women's human rights?

This story directly contradicts the other story. In attempt to Deny Bias I thought it well that both articles should be seperate to be examined independently.
