No one drowned fro rain unless they were in a flood situation. You don't think a slug lodged itself in his throat do you?

I'd go for the mold/pollen explanation. I've had lung infections which made my chest sound like bucket of lego bricks. Get one of those and your immune system becomes hyperactive. Any slight irritant would flood your lungs.
