Google violates child protection laws by collecting data from, and advertising to, children under 13, according to a complaint lodged with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by a coalition of child protection and privacy groups.

a violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

COPPA violators can be fined $41,484 per violation, a bill that would cost Google into the tens of billions were the complaint to be upheld.

Google, and more specifically Youtube, is alleged to be in violation of something called the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). COPPA enforces such things as marketing and advertising towards children under 13, when a website must seek parental consent, and how the website must protect the privacy and personal information of children. Youtube, however, seems to have thrown these things out the window in the name of money, and a lot of it. Content aimed at children under the age of 13 just so happens to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars of potential advertising revenue for Youtube every year.

In the US, the second-most popular channel is Ryan ToysReview, which has more than 20 billion views and 12 million subscribers ... This channel alone earned Google almost $5 million in advertising revenue last year

I hope they're investigated and found guilty. We need to stop letting these big companies like Facebook and Google get away with all of the immoral things they're doing.

Between this and the recent facebook issues, I'm hopeful that some of these big monoliths will be torn down and humanity can be freed from their grasp. That is, unless something much larger and much worse rises from the ashes. But, maybe by some slim chance, people are waking up to reality. I want to believe, but the vast majority of people are very stupid, so I must temper my excitement.

If anything, targeting the kids would be like their prime directive. Get em when they're young and you've got them for life. And with 8 year olds running around with their own phones, "phones" which are actually personal computers that happen to be the most sophisticated surveillance devices in human history, well it just goes without saying that Google God is collecting everything from voice to gaming & viewing habits to audio of the background noise all day while the kids all play.

I worked at Google for 3 months....The day I walked onto the campus, my phone was forced to take all updates. They wiped my pictures...for God's sake, I was 13 hours from home and had no pics of my wife and daughter...and they could find us within feet of where we were working at anytime. They monitored all contractors calls, and listened to us through our phones. I got home and bought a new phone because I could not roll back all the changes.

Had union brothers at facebook, same thing happened.

These companies are evil.....

Duck Duck Go!

Sorry, to late to close the stable door, the horse has already bolted. For future members, maybe, but to late for everyone else.

Yep. Yet how many parents have been strung up and wrung out to dry for "spying" on their children just because they suspected them of doing something wrong and as parents did what parents do?

Yet it's okay for alphabet to do it? Watch closely all the political talking heads acting surprised this has happened and listen closely to their words in the near future.

Trust me, this fake out rage by our politicians has nothing to do with the MIC spying on us. It's a ruse for something much worse. My guess? Using the internet as a way to infringe on the 1st.

parents, stop agreeing to yt policies.

We're quick to blame the tech companies but not the dirty advertising schemes by marketers for those companies which advertise on yt.

if they don't get it from yt, they will elsewhere.
Google sells 0 children toys or products, those data they collect in the form of their company user agreement, are all for the highest bidder. and there are a myriad of highest bidders in our capitalist society.

we created these monsters... every time we clicked on the 'Yes I Agree' button.

I've had facebook account for years, but went a long time not active on it. I finally went back to it when aim took down their messaging platform, just so I could keep in touch with mainly family members. to say I am not impressed would be an understatement. add all the political crap (from both sides that appears on my feed constantlly with all the crap I am reading about them going after my medical records, using it to target kids, well... think it's time to just wipe my pages clean and leave facebook. I have good friends that have turned into political raving lunatics online during the time that I was off of facebook. maybe someday the political climate will settle down and facebook will be worth something, but right now, nope, it's worth less than it was when i originally left it.

Welcome to the socialist revolution. The biggest lie being perpetrated on the people of earth is that greed is about money and only specific to the rich who have it. Greed is about control and money is just a resource gathered and exploited to obtain and maintain that control. What is happening now with the new left is that people are being turned into that resource that is to be exploited in order to obtain and maintain control for a specific group of individuals. And why it won't work even if the people who are doing it now had the best of intentions, which they don't - but let's say they do just for argument's sake - is because every revolution will have its Thermidorian Reaction and those who fail to plan for it are destined to fail. The same individuals who the new left are railing against will soon come to their movement if that it is where the power lies. The only way to curb this kind of behavior is through checks and balances. We can solve the issue of greed without flipping the coin to its other side and falling back into the same set of problems or potentially even worse.

Remember when Googles motto was 'don't be evil'?

They must have realized at inception that they had the potential to do things that were wrong and instead of holding themselves to the standard they set for themselves they simply ignored it. When Google first started I thought they were an amazing company. Now they are nothing, but another evil corporation.

What? Stopping Google from illegally collecting data about children under the age of 13 and then selling/using that data to manipulate them? It's not censorship, it's the law. Censorship would be telling Google and Youtube that they can't provide certain law-abiding content. Providing content and illegally collecting personal information are two entirely different things.

Orrrr parents could just stop letting little kids be online. I have four kids and honestly I don't think any of them really had any business being online up until about 10. They need to be kids and be outside playing with other kids, not on their phones or online. I think those first 10 years forms their basis for social interaction and being online is disruptive to normal social development. I think it's passing off parental responsibility to blame anyone but they parents.
