WASHINGTON – Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order titled, “Supporting Our Veterans During Their Transition From Uniformed Service to Civilian Life.” This Executive Order directs the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security to develop a plan to ensure that all new Veterans receive mental health care for at least one year following their separation from service.

“This critically important executive order will provide our service members with the support they need as they transition to civilian life. These dedicated men and women have put their lives on the line to protect our nation and our American way of life, and we owe them a debt we can never repay. We look forward to working with the VA and DOD to implement the President’s EO,” said Secretary Nielsen.

“In signing this Executive Order, President Trump has provided clear guidance to further ensure our Veterans and their families know that we are focusing on ways to improve their ability to move forward and achieve their goals in life after service,” said Secretary Shulkin.

Friendly reminder that Barack Obama’s DHS issued regulations that classified returning combat veterans as an elevated risk for domestic terrorism, along with self-identified “patriots” and firm believers in the Second Amendment.

So when you see the nauseating statistic that 22 veterans a day commit suicide, ask yourself if returning to a country that considers you a potential enemy of the state may have something to do with it.

Trump helps veterans, liberals be like WTF, I hate veterans now.

What a wonderful President we have in Donald J Trump!

Is that true about Obama? That he labeled returning Veterans as potentially violent? Omg!

do you have evidence that's NOT true?

that was an issue long before obama's regulation.

nice, do you have any other BS unfounded assertions you'd like to throw around?

liberals i know have been advocating that veterans need more mental help for a long time. don't know where you've been. maybe stop making threads for a minute and do some reading?

Trump, much like Obama before him, is missing the much bigger picture.

Services for our veterans should not be limited to "at least one year following their separation from service".

They made sacrifices that will/could affect them for the rest of their lives. We should help them in any way we can for the rest of their lives. Whether that's medical care or mental health care.

Funny that they say we owe them a debt we can never repay, but they will limit what services they can receive to a "transition period"?

This is nothing more than feel-good bull# for his base and does nothing to help our veterans in the grand scheme of things.

Exactly. The majority of veteran suicides (which, incidentally, is not at a rate of 22 per day) come from vets that are over the age of 50.

A year is good and all, and it's a start, but it's a band-aid over arterial bleeding.

It's only a start.

A bandaid over arterial bleeding is just about right.

How many is it?

VA Releases Veteran Suicide Statistics by State
September 15, 2017, 05:00:00 PM

“These findings are deeply concerning, which is why I made suicide prevention my top clinical priority,” said VA Secretary Dr. David J. Shulkin. “I am committed to reducing Veteran suicides through support and education. We know that of the 20 suicides a day that we reported last year, 14 are not under VA care. This is a national public health issue that requires a concerted, national approach.”

Only vet returning from Combat and just discharged from service and a whole year.

I guess it is just a start, after all many of the vets who have serious issues, stem from combat from years ago. Shall those also be forgotten? And yet does nothing to take care of the problem with say the VA.

This is pathetic at the most, not even a band aide at all.

Well said.

This action seems to be dropping the ball in a major way. It's nothing more than fluff to make us feel like we are doing something. Which we are, but not anything of real substance.

Only vet returning from Combat

That's before the EO. The EO eliminates that and opens it up to anybody and everybody leaving the service.
