I really would rather just let this piece speak for itself, but I understand it's good form and required in some forums here to not simply post an article without accompanying thoughts of your own. So here goes:

The nightmare of slavery should make us appreciate the blessings of today

I highly recommend this piece to everyone. I'm not gonna post quotes from it, because you really need to take the entire thing in it's entirety. It's basically written as a direct appeal to black Americans. However, I feel the author's perspective can be applied to a lot of issues, particularly for those of us in the US and other advanced nations. When you consider a lot of the "issues" Americans complain about today and consider an "injustice" or even "oppression", and then ask yourself how many people on this planet would give almost anything for that issue to be one of their major gripes in life, I think you will often come up with an unacceptably high number. We're spoiled. You remember the old meme, First World Problems.

We are indeed blessed not just to live in these relatively peaceful and convenient nations, but also at this time in the history of those nations. Compare your life to even one or two generations ago in your country and the hardships the average person faced were often much greater than the things we feel are unfair today. Does that mean we shouldn't continue to strive for improvement? Of course not. It is merely, I feel, a reasonable appeal to have some perspective. All things considered, most of us have it pretty good, regardless of race, gender, religion, whatever. I believe the author says it much more eloquently than I did.

So basically because slavery was horrible then, black people should not complain about the injustices they suffer today.

I knew this was coming, should've addressed it in the OP. That's actually not what it says at all. Try reading it again, this time with an open mind. Here's your sign.

ETA: I actually did address it in the OP, I guess you just couldn't be bothered to read the whole thing. That's my fault for having such high expectations.

Do you believe the descendants of slaves would have been better off if their ancestors would have not been brought to America, or they would not be better off?

Yes Americans should be glad to not be slaves.

Corporatism is creating slaves around the world in 3rd world countries making our $200 shoes, our classy dress shirts for fast fashion and farm raised shrimp.
The mentioned industries (they are not even close to all of them) have very questionable labor practices and the US citizens are insulated by the media that are owned by the same huge corporate conglomerate.

That is a question that could never be answered because it is a "what if". What if Europe never colonized other continents?

Contrary to popular belief, the European society was not the only reason modern society exists today. What if the Europeans never encountered these other societies...where would they be or the world for that matter?

Yet this new "slavery" in those locations most likely improved the lives of those in terms of economic enrichment.

Right?

This person and you are blind to reality. Minorities are more likely to be jailed for crimes that would get a white person probation or a fine. Minorities are more likely to be stereotyped as a criminal or a terrorist than a white male with a gun even thought they make up most of the mass shootings and have killed more Americans than radical Islam terrorists.

There is so many other inequalities in America that it is disgusting. What do some republicans want, shut up and be happy your not a slave no more.

Oh and the heart felt nets that Foxxcon put up for the employees were not to keep them from falling off trampolines during fun free thinking time.

The sad part is that there are more slaves in the world today than ever before in history. These slaves are primarily in Asia, Africa and the Middle East... and nobody is marching for them.

And doing away with slavery or going to a global min wage (some how) would be horrible for wallstreet,

But none the less it is a question that should be speculated and talked about.

I read her article; she states

many of us forget that. America is the greatest nation on Earth.

Purely subjective and obviously she hasn't ventured outside her little cocoon.

Not just in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.

Next time you drive by that young, or not so young, woman working a corner...there's a good chance she's not there because it's all fun and games.

According to some sources, the United States and Western Europe are prime destinations for the trade in sex slaves. Stands to reason that other forms of slavery are there, as well.

Sex trade

slavery.

It's disturbing, heartwrenching reading and viewing. Looking into this "industry" is not for the faint of heart.

Exactly. We just complain over relatively inane stuff here. Nobody wants to stand up to actual oppression. It's easier to just start a hashtag campaign and ask for free stuff.

I wouldn't suggest watching anything on Netflix for any source of truth.
