Gates To Hell? Hundreds of ancient structures found on edge of Volcanoes in Saudi Arabia

Kind of reminds me of the Nazca lines, but these have "gates" built into them.


Very large man made "structures" are laying in plain sight, some over lava domes. The stone walls are being called gates, even though the researchers have no idea what or why these were built.

Experts are still unsure as to the purpose of the structures, but some of them were found to be draped over lava domes – a mound shaped area where lava has dried near volcanoes.

The stone walls, which have been called “gates” as they resemble field gates when viewed aerially, were found in a region in west-central Saudi Arabia called Harrat Khaybar.

Large gates, some are are as large as 1,700 feet. These gates are found in very bleak surroundings, no water of food.

The size of the gates varies massively, with the smallest being 43 feet and the largest stretching to 1,699 feet.

Prof Kennedy adds: "Gates are found almost exclusively in bleak, inhospitable lava fields with scant water or vegetation, places seemingly amongst the most unwelcoming to our species.”

I once knew a Saudi who told me that there were certain ancient ruins that were sealed offby Saudi government.

Thats interesting! No mention on height of the walls, could it be animal pens? Not quite shaped correctly for kites but they look similar

Bush and Blair were warned they would open the gates of Hell I guess they must be them then.

Two points. The land was much more fertile back in the time these were made - so the idea that the arid and inhospitable landscape should come into account regarding the understanding of these is an anachronism. Also, these are not unlike early ditches used to corral cattle (initially to keep them in an area and later used to isolate and funnel them for butchery purposes). Still really fascinating and cool finds, regardless of their earthly explanation.

For some reason Exodus 19 came to mind with the putting up of barriers around the mountain to protect the people.

They're uni-flow pens meant to heard livestock to the constriction where the slaughtering takes place.

Maybe the area was more inhabitable when they build the pens? Doesn't look like there are walls though.

Looks like Dilbert? The greens things are grass pasture and trees. Looks like someone dug ditches. Perhaps the walls were to stop animals from walking into the lava.

Seems like a hard place to house animals. But the whole area looks pretty desolate.

I'm not an expert of course but I believe those more educated than I surmised that in that general range of the time period it was assumed to have been used (~10-6BC) the area was far more lush. Also the structure itself didn't need to be especially high, just steep enough that the livestock wouldn't cross it.

There are similar lined structures found throughout the Middle East and in the Sahara. I think they have something to do with capturing and transporting water in some way for some reason. How's that for a definitive answer?
