Russia looks to have had a 6.2 precursor in same location 12 hrs earlier

M 6.2 - 183km ESE of Nikol'skoye, Russia
2017-07-17 11:05:08 UTC 54.582°N 168.647°E 7.9 km depth

What?

How did they know? Is that what you're saying? Russia announced this 12 hours before it occurred? I'm confused.

Here's a screenshot
With the times and location as recorded by USGS. TWO seperate quakes

Tsunami threat has passed. Thank God

aye aye aye, as someone who's in Seattle right on the Sound its crazy that I had no idea this major EQ happened earlier... Scary stuff to think how oblivious people can be if they arent glued to their TV/computer/etc..

So, no more tsunami threat? was the initial threat just for Russia/Alaska?

I'm in Vancouver.
It would likely have been my BC coastline, Washington, Oregon and California.
Japan, Alaska, Russia , all surrounding coastlines can be at risk
It's ok now though. Hawaii gets its own notices.

Happens quite frequently actually that we get these warnings that are later given an all clear. Anytime a very large quake happens off in the pacific ocean near us!

Two options..

*Messed up the times in the news report

or

*Russia have a quake machine, and the media was somehow in the know how when a test was being made

Violet is referring to the foreshock earthquake.

They happen, but not all the time. The 9.1 in Japan had a foreshock as well. There is some speculaiton that the 7.7 might actually be a foreshock to a larger quake based on the locations of the aftershocks.
