Thought you all might get a kick out of these. Taken about 45 minutes ago with a Nexus 4 phone. Surprised at how well they turned out, Certainly didn't look like anything the photos to the naked eye.

I was sooooo tempted to put these in the UFO section just to see what the reaction would be..

"A moon dog, moondog, or mock moon, (scientific name paraselene, plural paraselenae, meaning "beside the moon") is a relatively rare bright circular spot on a lunar halo caused by the refraction of moonlight by hexagonal-plate-shaped ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds".

I've never heard of a "dog moon" before. Perhaps you would edit your op to explain to us what that is?

It's the same as sun dog. I've seen both many times. Beautiful.

Sun or moon dogs are called that because they look like copies of it by the sun or moon.

From what I can tell this is what I have seen before and was called a "Moondog" in my search.

The pics you posted look like a different phenomenon? Or maybe thats what you meant in the OP that the cam looked different than the eye.

That's cool, but it's not a moon dog. It's not even the Moon's 22-degree halo which is the large faint circle around the Moon. What you saw was a much smaller circle around the Moon, that had reddish edges, right? I think it's called the Moon's corona.

Here's what Moon dogs looks like: www.wday.com...

Dog? Don't see any dog. Looks like an Alka-Seltzer in the bottom of a dirty sink.
