Its almost funny... We know cops sometimes make big mistakes like this that cost lives or grievous bodily injury. But just think, when have you Ever
heard of a situation where the cops come corward and admit they made a big mistake? Unless they know there's no chance, they Will alter evidence, lose
paperwork, plant guns, drugs, lie about their lives being in danger, whatever it takes, to avoid being demoted, fired, lose pension, be covicted of a
crime, or even just a light punishment.
There's not much we can do about it... The way things are now, people don't want to get their hands dirty or take the time and effort to be able to
protect themselves and their community, they want to put that responsibility into someone elses hands, so they don't have to know what it's like to
fight a man to the death, or see the look in their eyes as they take their last breath, risking their own life in the process. They would rather
someone else take care of all that unpleasant business.
Only problem is, unless the police are right next to you when a criminal puts your life in danger, how are they going to protect you? See, they are
more there to go find and arrest the bad guy afterward, rather than to prevent crime and protect you. Of course, whenever the wealthy folks have an
event or gathering, they actually Do have plenty of police and security right nearby them, so they are protected.
Anyway, my point is, the way things are now, we need police. And police
are just normal people like me and you, they are not perfect or any better or morally stronger than me or you. They don't want to lose their job,
pension, etc, or go to jail or prison and have other legal consequences to deal with over one single mistake, even a big one... The way you are gonna
see it, is that you have put Your Ass on the line for this community for however many years with very little gratitude or appreciation, and there were
a few times you did something that was pretty much heroic, so as far as you are concerned, this community can owe you one little favor. These little
"favors", are the unspoken, nondisclosed price of having someone else watch your ass for you. Same goes for the military... Anyone you entrust with
Your safety will take little extra liberties such as this example in the OP.
WHAT? You're telling me you wanna give up your job, your benefits, your pension, upcoming promotions, etc, over THIS? The scumbag wouldve eventually
been robbed and killed over his drug & money stash anyway, living this dangerous, illegal lifestyle. Besides, you've risked your life on this job for
too long to throw it all away now. If the guy wasn't dealing illegal drugs in the first place... none of this ever would have happened. HE put himself
in this situation! HE chose to put his life, AND YOURS BTW, in danger by selling drugs! You never put a gun to his head and told him "sell drugs!" And
you've got a family to feed, dammit!
You'd be surprised how easy it will be to rationalize and convince yourself to cover for yourself, and your buddies... especially in a situation
where, even if You were willing to accept responsibility, doing so would implicate the other guys on the team... and Detective Broflofski just had his
4th kid with his wife, you yourself have a family as well, and the other guys are all in agreement we should keep our mouths shut and blame it on the
perp. What are you gonna do?
