Thought you meant the Polish guy that was found shot. That would make more sense to discuss instead of another topic altogether unless you're accidentally in the wrong thread...

I made it pretty clear, most people can deal with 2 thoughts at once.

He was supposedly followed after he ran off from the truck.

MAybe he was in the truck but not driving, maybe he was the driver, maybe he was at the market and ran off frightened and the bystander mis-interpreted what he saw.

Worrying if the perp is still at large. Of course, no one from his community have come forward to give him up either...

It's a confusing situation. The legitimate driver of the truck, a Polish man, has been out of contact with his family since 4 PM yesterday, German time, I believe. That's about three hours before the incident occurred. I think he was the one found dead in the cab of the truck. He may have been driving right up until the end. Witnesses reported hearing some sort of loud bang or boom or something like that just as the truck was starting to go into the crowd. Was that a shot?

The perp may have jumped out after shooting and just disappeared into the confusion.

The Polish man I read was shot to death. According to unofficial reports.

There are doubts that the Pakistani was the culprit as there were no traces of smoke residue on hin or other signs of a fight.
Which should be there assuming he shot the original Polish driver.

And IF he was the driver, why didn't he shoot anyone (at least the person who followed him on feet)? Did he lose the gun, left the truck and kept running in a state of panic? Maybe.

Or maybe there was a completely different person after all. We might see.

According to Die Welt:

www.welt.de...

In the cab of the truck was found according to information of the news agency dpa blood-smeared clothes. In the case of the suspect who was later arrested at some distance from the crime scene, on the other hand, no clothing stained with blood was found, according to security circles. When he was arrested, he did not have a weapon at his disposal, the "Tagesspiegel" reported.

According to the feed from Le Monde, the police are going to be examining videos from the area to try to determine exactly what happened in detail. (This took place in an upscale shopping district which is probably saturated with CCTV cameras.)

It sounds like they want to definitively eliminate the arrested man by this and other means, if possible. They are quite doubtful about his involvement.

Edit: The police commissioner says it may be a while, hours or even days before they will know details of how the attack occurred. He says they have identified six of the twelve deceased victims and they are German.

Take Yahoo news for what you will, but they mention this:

Among the dead was a man in the truck, who succumbed as paramedics treated him, Berlin police spokesman Winfried Wenzel said. Police said later that the man was a Polish national, but didn't give further details of who he was or what happened to him.

www.yahoo.com...

So not DoA as previous news bits offered up had insinuated. Dead, after paramedics tried treating him. He still may have been shot, but I find the lack of any info on WHAT his lethal injuries were quite telling. IMO, just as possible he wasn't shot at all. And considering the police don't think they have the right person, maybe the mystery Middle Easterner isn't right, either. Blame is completely up in the air at the moment.
Everybody should consider shoving the vitriol and settle down for now, for all we know, he got into a dispute, got stabbed and tried to drive off in vain or some s#.

According to the feed from Le Monde, the police are still looking for the weapon used in the attack. It wasn't left in the truck and was not found on the arrested man.

The German Interior Minister says the Polish victim was a gunshot victim. He also said the guy in custody is a suspect, and suspect doesn't necessarily mean perpetrator. According to the truck's GPS, it was parked in Berlin and then several "inexpert attempts" were made to start it, starting around 4 pm. Once it was started, it drove approximately six miles towards the Christmas market.

This is a translation of Le Monde's summary of what is known so far about the attack:

www.lemonde.fr...

Update:

Is this an attack?

Angela Merkel confirmed this morning that it was a "terrorist attack". The Minister of the Interior, Thomas de Maizière, has simply called it an "attack". The Berlin police said the driver of the heavyweight had "deliberately" crashed into the crowd. The investigation is oriented towards an attack by the ramming truck, similar in its circumstances to that of Nice, although no claim of responsibility or information on possible motivations has been circulated so far.

What do we know about the truck driver?

On the basis of testimony, the police arrested on Monday evening about two kilometers from the scene of the drama a man supposed to be the driver of the vehicle: a Pakistani arrived on 31 December 2015 in Germany by way of the Balkans. Interrogated by the investigators, the man denies being the author of the attack. The Berlin police and the federal prosecutor's office, competent in terrorism cases, have acknowledged that their services were in fact "not certain" that the man arrested "is the driver" of the murderous truck, considering it possible that the real driver might be on the run and potentially armed.

Where did the truck come from?

It is a heavyweight belonging to a Polish transport company, which has had no news of its driver since Monday. The German police think it was stolen. The dead body of the Polish driver, shot dead, was found in the truck after the tragedy, said Mr de Maiziere. But the weapon that was used to kill him has disappeared.

They are now saying on skynews that the refugee they caught may not be involved which means the guy who did it is still on the run but I would like to know what that refugee was doing at that market at that time all the same. It could just be he is innocent bystander but it does smell iffy.

They're also saying that at least one person followed the driver on foot once he jumped out of the lorry, and that person was on the phone with the police as they followed the driver.

Curious.

Sadly nothing new about the Polish driver, his death or the theft of the vehicle. Other than the disappeared weapon.
