Is it possible to have a religion that contradicts itself?

I haven't found a religion that doesn't contradict itself. If a religion contradicts itself; you can eliminate any possibility that it's true. That's my belief on this topic.

Let's establish the definition of "religion" that I'm using.

religion

an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods
www.merriam-webster.com...

If a religion has a contradiction and the contradiction is true, then it is also false. The Liar Paradox proves that.

The first sentence in this essay is a lie. There is something odd about saying so, as has been known since ancient times. To see why, remember that all lies are untrue. Is the first sentence true? If it is, then it is a lie, and so it is not true. Conversely, suppose that it is not true. As we (viz., the authors) have said it, presumably with the intention of you believing it when it is not true, it is a lie. But then it is true!
Liar Paradox

So, if you're going to include a contradiction in your religious belief, you cannot claim that the contradiction is true. It is not true; it is both true and false simultaneously.

My conclusion is that it is not possible to have a religion that contradicts itself. Religion includes a "system of beliefs." In order to include a contradiction into your "system of beliefs", you must believe that the contradiction is true and false simultaneously. That means that the contradiction is no longer a belief for you.

Why does that matter?

Good point. I'm going to say no it is not. Although I only have a good understanding of the main 3 and a couple other smaller ones.

This “paradox” is one reason why I find some philosophy to be a complete balltearing waste of time.

“This sentence is a lie”.

If it is in fact a lie, then the statement is correct.

If it is not a lie, then the statement is incorrect.

Ain't no paradox there that I can see. It's just the usual crap semantics, and applying true/false boundaries where none should exist.

And yes I'd say that any contradictory fundamental tenets of any religion make it laughable.

Kind Regards

Religion always contradicts itself giving enough time.

I'm trying to figure out why you don't seem to see that your post contradicts itself? You claimed that religions contradict themselves and then you claim that it is not possible for a religion to contradict itself.

Perhaps I should apply your reasoning process and assume that, therefore, you don't exist?

The God Presence that exists beyond this Universe will never contradict itself.

Its mans limited understanding of the Word of God that creates so many misunderstandings, that then transform into contradictions.

Secondly, if the Annunaki wrote the Book of Lies to keep the human peasants under control, then their statements are failing to come to light in their Matrix world, because the God Presence is stopping their evil plan from coming to fruition.

I was talking to an evolutionist about their religion, I asked about evolution gradualism and punctuated equilibrium, what they thought was the truth
I obviously figure evolution is a religion, its contradictory and, well cut and paste the rest from yours.

Now my understanding, the bible and its the bible you are going after, christians not religion, so its a strange thread title.

It was written by men, men make mistakes, omissions, its a historical record, written in an old language, copied, and translated
You want perfection from the imperfect

Nice detective work I might add, a link, another cut and paste thread, been there done that here, same same no different
It doesnt detract from the whole, well it does if you have a compulsive disorder

I recon if you read and studied those issues you could right 90% off, 10% could well be questionable.

Unless of course logic and intelligence is beyond an individuals capacity

The idea of blind acceptance as a virtue should give one the hint that something is very wrong with some religious concepts and that they have more the hand of man than the hand of an infallible God behind them.

The other thing that bothers me is that religion should be about spiritual things yet it often involves itself more in sexual matters and the collection of money. I also don't like the concept of people dressing up to show their religion off and try to garner a super position for themselves through it. What do beards, weird hats and frocks on men actually have to do with spirituality?

Hey stinklebaum

No of course not
It's make believe, just like every other thread that talks about spirituality and woo on ats
Or
It's beyond what people see in the natural world

It's not normal, it's supernatural

I guess you are one of those who believes that truth is only what you see and what you can touch and every one who sees differently in a crackpot

This word is filled with religions that contradict themselves. Christianity. Islam, and i forgot what the jewish religion is called

They all preach love and understanding but have killed millions since the start of their religion.

So based on that they all contradict themselves.

Did those figures kill people in the name of Atheism though? Or is it just another irrelevant fact (like they all ate food) used by Theists to demonise atheists?

At least you can finally admit it's make belief. Talking bushes, talking donkeys, woman turns into salt, staffs being turned into snakes. Funny these things never happen anymore and your religion has a convenient excuse for the lack of supernatural now.

Funny, I know grown adults who think dirt and water turned into humans by random chance
That doesn't happen anymore either, convenient excuses?

Dirt? Where are you getting that from. That's not even accurate whatsoever. No convenient excuse either. Life is already here. Why would it need to happen again. It continues to adapt and change.

Christianity's excuse for the lack of miracles is that since Jesus died for our sins god no longer is active. That's convenient. Especially since Jesus never said he would die for our sins. That dogma never came from his mouth. He also said believers would do greater works than he did. I don't see any believers walking on water or levitating or raising the dead, healing the paralyzed.

And if you think when he talks of works being spiritual that could not be true because according to Christianity Jesus was without sin and perfect therefore nobody could do anything greater spiritually.

Joe, I am amazed you were a christian for seven years and how much you missed.
Its terrible, whatever church you attended, whoever was responsible for teaching you.

Maybe you thought you were going to pray for lots of good stuff and do miracles, I dont know, I dont know what you understand or were taught

"He also said believers would do greater works than he did."
Another verse way out of context

"Especially since Jesus never said he would die for our sins"

No he didnt did he, Jesus never said that
Institution of the Lord's Supper
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”

though he did all that, all those actions, yet he didnt use the words you wanted

Sorry Jo, I cant help you

So tell me Joe, why is the miracle of abiogenesis not still happening, why did that stop?

How about the failed prophecies. Like how Egypt was supposed to be destroyed by the Babylonians.

Or this one
Isaiah 17:1 “An oracle concerning Damascus: See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.”
FAIL: Damascus is still inhabited today with well over a million people and there was never a time where it ceased to be a city. It is widely known as being the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.
